Crysis Media
Electronic Arts sends along some Crysis media, showing off the upcoming sci-fi shooter from Far Cry developer Crytek. Over at FileShack you can find the high-def, direct-feed GDC 2006 trailer and locally we have a couple of screenshots.

So EA is only the distributor on this one, right? This is still Crytek's baby. EA isn't actually developing or doing the quality testing this product or anything, are they?

I think this is a truth with some modification. Although EA didn't own DICE they were still a major funder of the project, that means they got a say in everything. I recently went to a seminar with a DICE developer and he talked about the intimate relation with the publisher and how publisher input can seriously screw up the development if the development team lacks a good producer that can mediate between the developers and the publisher/funder.
In the end it's also the one who paid the most money that decides when the game is Done™ and Ready For Release™. Not saying it's all EA's fault, I'd say it's probably shared between them.

Don't be ridiculous. Crytek is in full control here, you have to remember EA owns DICE nowdays. Crysis is going to be totally sweet.
Oh and just in case you didn't know, even though Crytek has joined with EA for this release, Ubisoft owns the rights to the Far Cry franchise (and has been developing the console versions in house to rave reviews). I'm sure Crytek is going to keep the rights this time around, last time they were an unknown publisher but this time they're superstars so they can do things more on their terms.

What do you mean, there is nothing in that announcement that implies EA is handling technicals.
You people need to calm down, if Far Cry is any example the support will be great. Crytek added SM 3.0 support, HDR, and an enhanced 64-bit version, all after the release. EA isn't going to mess with Crytek, they're too good a catch.
Also people remember EA owns DICE. They don't own Crytek!

Maybe not, I'm sure Valve is pretty much working without EA's intervention. Granted Valve is probobly paying for the entire development staff themselves. If Farcry has made enough money it is possible Crytek is funding themselves who knows. But I am going to remain hopeful since the first Far Cry was pretty much devoid of showstopper bugs as far as I can tell.

Exactly, that's the difference. Valve is entirely self-funded, plus they already own their own distribution method. EA is just providing an alternative distribution method. I highly doubt Crytek has the funds to self-publish a game like this, even with Far Cry's success. Coming off of a deal with another major publisher, that just seems really unlikely.
And Far Cry had at least one major bug. Right at the end, I reached a point where the game would just not let me progress at all. It was really frustrating because I rarely finish FPS games, but I played all the way through that one and couldn't complete it. :( -

I know there's a lot of shit released. Not disputing that. But yeah - Burnout, The Sims, Battlefield, SSX, NFS...
I just think the hate EA bandwagon is a tad old. Ubisoft releases crap. So does Activision. I think we should spread the hate.
But I'll shut up because I'm very much in the minority here.-
People should hate EA when it actually does something wrong, and not just arbitrarily or pre-emptively. At this point it's absolutely ridiculous to claim that EA is going to have a negative impact on Crysis, and I personally am confident everything will turn out just fine.
The amount of time I spend trying to dispell stupidity these days is just out of control. Everybody should be talking about Crysis itself and how awesome i's going to be instead of just whining about EA.

Yep, distribution only (they may do some QA, depends on if crytek want them to)
EA Partners is EA's distribution arm, not their full-on publishing business that funds games and dictates schedules and patch releases to detrimental effect all for short term profit.
Valve use EAP to distribute retail copies of HL2 and DoD/CS.
