Game Developers Choose Awards

The International Game Developers Association has announced the nominees for this year's Game Developers Choice Awards, presented at GDC in March. The nominations are chosen and voted on by members of the IGDA, open to anyone in the game development industry, and that shows through to the wording in the headline of the announcement's press release: "Innovators David Jaffe, Tim Schafer, and Fumito Ueda dominate list of nominees for 6th annual Game Developers Choice Awards." Jaffe's God of War (PS2) from Sony's Santa Monica studio ended up on top with six nominations: Best Game, Audio, Character Design, Game Design, Visual Arts, and Writing. That was followed by Fumito Ueda's Shadow of the Colossus (PS2) from SCEI, garnering five: Best Game, Character Design, Game Design, Technology, and Visual Arts. Three games were tied for three nods apiece, including Tim Schafer's Psychonauts (PS2, Xbox, PC) from Double Fine Studios (additionally, Double Fine received a nomination for New Studio), Bizarre Creations' Project Gotham Racing 3 (X360), and Harmonix's Guitar Hero (PS2). Nintendo has a few somewhat surprising entries, with Animal Crossing: Wild World (DS) getting nods for Best Game and Game Design, Nintendogs (DS) up for Game Design and Technology, and Toshio Iwai's Electroplankton (DS) up for Audio.
"Recognizing and showcasing individual achievement in the creation of games is a core principle of the GDC," Jamil Moledina, director, Game Developers Conference, said. "For that reason, we are proud to produce and host the Choice Awards."

"Every year, thousands of nominations are submitted by developers from around the world," Jason Della Rocca, executive director, IGDA, said. "Voting on the final recipients will be extremely competitive, and who can spot excellence and creative achievement better than the creators themselves?"

No fees are involved with a game's eligibility to the awards. Any game may be nominated by IGDA members. In addition to the game-centric awards, the IGDA presents awards to individuals within the industry, to be announced later. These are the Lifetime Achievement, First Penguin, Community Contribution, Maverick and Innovation awards. They represents an individual's combined contributions to the development community or games industry as a whole.

The Game Developers Choice Awards are presented on Wednesday, March 22 at 6:30p.m. in the San Jose Civic Auditorium, and the ceremony is open to all Game Developers Conference attendees.
