Evening Reading

Well that misleading advertising story is pretty interesting stuff. There certainly is no question that there have been a number of videogame ads over the years that have done similar things. Maybe we'll see more money spent on development and a little less on cut scenes. Hah!

yes. i finally figured out the trick to moving up in the ladders though, so i dont play the shack servers much anymore.

Even if it isn't being played by the Shack you should still give it a run. It's great. It'll be a great change of pace from the gruelling nights of Gran Turismo 4's "Not because this is fun, but because it pays better than the other series" grindfest races.

If you're having difficulty getting the server to cooperate, you might want to try pretending that I'm going to ban the crap out of you if you don't get a move on and see if that helps. Because I am if you don't.

At the menu I can move the mouse icon but cant click on anything. If I hit the arrow on the kb it randomly selects one of the icons. If I'm lucky I can get the one I want within a dozen tries. >:(

Yeah, I've seen past posts of people that have to disable two different items.

I don't know what the problem is with those Saitek USB keyboards, but this isn't the first game I've seen have real difficulties with them.

so this is the trackmania thread...

i just installed this (about 3 hours ago) and just stopped playing.

was on troz's server. some of the tracks are really really fun. some are good but awful for multiplayer. and a lot of the shacker maps just plain suck :\

i'm sorry but it's true. they rely on gimmicks and tricks that require intimate knowledge of the track.

and troz is great at designing fast, simple, and fun tracks. :D

very fun game, glad i gave it a shot

I agree. With any track (shack or otherwise) the chances that it sucks are a good 10-20:1. when i had my server up i had to go through 20-30 (on average) internet tracks to find a good one. the average is better on the shack tracks since TroZ ruins the curve.

you should have to unlock the editor to use it...

force you to play through all the maps and look at what kind of flow and speed makes a good map fun. and see that gimmicks like non stop looping and half mile long jumps are NOT fun when you actually want to finish the map in the time allotted

the thing is that most people will never open the editor. the people who will open the editor will never make a map. the people who make a map will genereally not revise it just publish it once they've validated it. Most of the Shack map makers however are actually getting much better at making maps thanks to real feedback that generally doesn't happen with the majority of maps online. in fact, most of the highest rated maps i've found online suck worse than the worst shack offerings. it's all a matter of wanting to improve map style and get beyond "first map" syndrome which many people can get stuck in.

It's also necessary to get beyond your first map and realize that it will more than likely suck..a lot. but learn from it and move on. some people are way too attached to their own creations to be able to take what they've learned and move on to a second map 10 times better than the first until they really figure out how to make a map that they like and is fun but keeping their individual taste and style. The progress thus far has been quite good on the shack.

controller question i've been using the keyboard for trackmania and doing pretty good with it... but I think I can get some times lower if I use a controller. Any recommendations? I am particularly interested in using the xbox controller. I seem to remember people saying they were able to hook up their xbox (or xbox 360?) controller via usb or something like that.

Wired X360 controller FTW! I just got one last week and Trackmania is the first game I really put in some playtime with. It's a fantastic controller. I used to have a wireless Logitech one and the thing ate batteries like Degenerate eats Raoul's sphincter.
