Sex Workers Call for GTA Boycott

17
It seems that just about every politician, distressed parent, and advocacy group around has demanded either the censorship, recall, or boycott of Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. The media flurry has died down a bit in recent weeks, but in case you thought it was actually completely over, another group has stepped in to carry the torch. The Sex Workers Outreach Program USA, which serves to lobby for the rights and interests of prostitutes nationwide, is currently calling for a boycott on Rockstar's controversial franchise, presumably referring mainly to the San Andreas iteration. (Statement is mirrored here if need be.)
And in the interest of furthering sex worker's human and civil rights to life and personal safety, we object to any media which represents sex workers as legitimate targets of violence, rape and murder. Censorship is a blight on the freedoms we hold dear but we wholeheartedly encourage citizens to vote with their dollars by refusing to purchase products which encourage the denigration and destruction of prostitutes. Since the video game Grand Theft Auto accrues points to players for the depiction of the rape and murder of prostitutes, SWOP-USA calls on all parents and all gamers to boycott Grand Theft Auto.

SWOP-USA takes issue with the treatment of protitutes in the game. It is certainly true that prostitutes can be killed in current-gen GTA titles, as can just about every other NPC in the entire current series, though allegations of depicting rape seem unfounded.

The statement heavily cites a 2001 report by David Walsh of the National Institute on Media and the Family, which points to a causal link between children's exposure to violent media such as video games and the likelihood of being more aggressive in real life. This is of course an issue that has been hotly contested for years, and frequently used as evidence in cases relating to crimes allegedly inspired by video games.

Not really sure where the rape stuff came from at all. Can an interest group ever be accurate these days?
