The Movies Demo
Activision sends along a demo for The Movies, allowing you to try out the first five years of the game's story mode. In The Movies you run a Hollywood motion picture studio, and are charge with everything from hiring and firing personnel to maintaining the sets to shooting and editing the films.

It has many similar attributes. You can actually forego the whole moviemaking part if you want and simply play it like The Sims. You build and landscape your studio, hire actors and crew, keep them happy, assign them to projects, etc., etc.

Yes, there's a sandbox mode for exactly that purpose.
