Chris Sawyer Sues Atari

35

Next Generation reports that RollerCoaster Tycoon creator Chris Sawyer is suing Atari, saying that the publisher owes him unpaid royalties. The series has generated a whopping $180 million in revenue, of which Sawyer has received $30 million. But Sawyer says Atari miscalculated payments between 1998 and 2003, which resulted in him not getting another $4.8 million to which he says he is entitled.

I've heard he's kind of a dick. Like people would release trainers and stuff so they could sanbox RCT and RCT2, and he'd release patches for the specific purpose of breaking trainers, and upgrades and addons and stuff wouldn't work unless you applied the patch first.

If it's his, why should he not complain? Don't trivialize this. I have a decent sized bank account, but just because I do doesn't mean I can't get upset when someone owes me 20 bucks.

Why the hell should he ? I think he has the right to the royalties. Its afterall he who created the game would you just say no to that when you have the rights ?

yea yea, i guess i jumped the gun.. but still 30 million. g-damn.

im just a little peeved at how the publisher is always blamed. i dont think that is always correct. they are always seen as this big evil peice of shit thats destroys the fun in games.
its true most of the time, but bashing the publisher has become most peoples favorite hobby.
they are taking huge boody risks with these developers whos ego's are sometimes very very difficult to deal with.

anyways, i dont know who is right or wrong, sawyer or atari. im sure both have legit reasons.. blah blah.. so ill leave it at that.

They're not taking nearly as much risk as as independent developer is taking just by existing. A publisher generally has a broad portfolia with many projects and tries to mitigate risk as much as possibly by having profitable projects even if some fall through. An independent developer has a lot riding on just one or two projects, and that profit means a lot more to them. Granted, in Sawyer's case it's not like heis going bankrupt or anything, but look at the revenue the game made versus what he got paid. He made the game entirely himself, Atari just published it. With a game like this, there's hardly even any risk given how popular the franchise is. Sure he's wealthy but I don't begrudge him trying to get all the money he's due instead of letting Atari have more of it.
