Romero In Charge of New Studio

101
In case you haven't heard, after leaving Midway, John Romero has now co-founded a new gaming studio in northern California and is working on a new game. The former id and ION Storm designer apparently left Midway back in June but did not confirm the news until July. He was working on an update to the classic Gauntlet series, entitled Gauntlet: Seven Sorrows. Word of his newly-founded game studio was released by Romero himself on his own forum, though no specifics were revealed. The posts were made a few weeks ago but the story is just now making the rounds.
"Daikatana's old, old news now. Like, over 5 years ago. And the fact that everyone remembers that particular game instead of the dozens of other games I've made just shows how negatively slanted the media is - negativity sells. When news of my new game somehow gets out, I think everyone will be a bit shocked. For the record, I'm co-founder of a new game company in the Bay Area and am much better off in many ways than I was at Midway. Much happier now."

He was also sure to emphasize that the game is "going to be a very new experience for me in many ways and I'm really excited about it. And yes, I have complete control over this one." When contacted by Shacknews for comment, Romero could only reply, "The only comment that I have is that we will have more details on our plans in the coming months. We're currently in stealth mode."

Romero also noted that he recommends the Logitech G15 Gaming Keyboard.

As much as he has been slammed for Daikatana, I'm looking forward to see him making a big comeback and can't WAIT for the new Gauntlet game. I hope he's succesful with this and can't wait to see what he has coming down the pipe. I hate to admit it but Daikatana had a solid MP component that kept me coming back.

One of the father's of Doom can't be kept down for long. Go Go Romero.

Yeah despite the fiasco that was Daikatana I've always kind of liked Romero. He's always seemed like a pretty good (if arrogant at times) guy and I liked how much emphasis he always put on design when a lot of mid 90s FPS guys didn't focus as much on that side of things.

Anyway, I hope he does well.

Reading Masters of Doom gave me e^1000000 more respect for him. Coming from a rough childhood myself to success, I can familiarize.

Yeah, that book was really excellent, and offered some great perspective on all the big names involved. It really strips away a lot of the hype that's built up around them over the years.

          Yeah, MoD was excellent.

It gave over hundred pages of new information about the boys at ID back in the 90's. One of the best gaming related books I've ever read.

seen very few people get that GENUINELY excited about games - you don't think shackers get genuinely excited about games?

I never though Daikatana was all *that* bad. He would be better off staying in stealth mode all the time, as his own self-hyping machine is the reason things went as poorly as they did so long ago.

With game engines and game hardware being as good as they are now it would be hard to fail if you have a good design and solid mechanics. So good luck to him I say.

I like him to. Daikatana wasn't exactly my cup of tea, but from what I've read, and from what he has done, I will respect his creativity, and how he does manage to get some good ideas out there. Yes, he probably has a bit of ego/arrogancy, but at the same time, I'd be bothered if he didn't. Just as I'd be bothered is Carmack suddenly turned into someone like J. Allard.

In the grand scheme of things, looking back at it, Daikatana wasn't that bad. Sure it was buggy as hell and had some really bad levels, especially at the beginning of the game but compared to the hate leveled against it, it didn't deserve being villianized.

Ofcourse all the crap that happened at Ion Storm is another matter.
