Take-Two Earnings and News

7
In a conference call today, Publisher Take-Two Interactive announced its earnings as well as some news regarding upcoming games. Most of it regards the perennially newsworthy Grand Theft Auto series. First off, M-rated Xbox and PC versions of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas will be shipping to stores next week to fill the void created by retailers refusing to sell an Adults Only title. A date for an M-rated PS2 version of the game was not given, but it should ship some time during the company's current fiscal quarter--that is, before October 31. Grand Theft Auto: Liberty City Stories (PSP), after numerous delays, will be shipping in that same time frame.

Rockstar's upcoming title Bully (PS2, Xbox) will be pushed from Fall 2005 to early 2006. However, both Rockstar's The Warriors (PS2, Xbox) and Firaxis Games' Civilization IV (PC) will be released within the current quarter, a bit earlier than expected.

On the less specific front, Take-Two announced that around this time next year, we can expect to see a "sequel of a Rockstar brand". It doesn't seem like it will necessarily be another GTA game, though, because Take-Two also revealed that in 2006 we will see "extensions of the Grand Theft Auto franchise".

Financially, Take-Two saw a 6% increase in sales over this quarter last year, up to $169.9M, but posted $28.8M in losses. This is in large part due to the fiscal woes associated with that whole Hot Coffee business. By certain accounts, though, the publisher made out alright--GameSpot reports that some expected Take-Two to lose significantly more.

(Good old MorrisatCNN reported this by way of the comments but here it is on the front page.)
