Long story short, support for stopped after the second patch, this combined with a few other moves from the devs and publishers resulted in the Total War fanbase being incredibly pissed, as any fan based easily is

No it didn't, the new publisher allows them to do a third patch for the game.

I had just hoped that Creative Assembly (and its publisher for that matter) would be a little more careful in the way it treats its fan base. EA is the big boy in town and the sure-fire way to win support is by being the good guys.

The games they publish are not mainstream in terms of every Jo blow wanting to play it. Only recently did Rome: TW actually capture a larger fan base than before (how many of you actually played Medieval Total War and its predecessor Shogun). I can understand EA getting away with sloppy support but not a group which says they "care about their fan base".

I hope they continue to make more large scale battle games as I thoroughly enjoy them all. But I refuse to purchase a piece of software which is piecemeal.

I'm not sure what drives you to consider Rome:TW a "piecemeal" product? I've been playing it regularly since it was released and haven't had any memorable problems with it, bug or gameplay-wise.

My one biggest gripes with it is the realtime battle mode. I find the units to be completely unresponsive and never really do what I ask them to do. The best example I could give would be during a siege. The whole AI logics behind the units makes it a huge chore just to keep things in line.

Try getting your units into a city without having things running rampant. You can't just select your armies and say "Go into the city". They'll just sit there as there isn't a defined route. You have to manually click each individual unit and manually click on a location in the city.

Honestly, I've recently installed the Rome: Total Realism mod and I've been having a MUCH better time with play balancing all squared away, bigger theatre and more diverse units but the AI is still not what it should be, nor what they've said it would be.

It'll be interesting to see how the WarHammer franchise does with their new RTS which is comparable to Rome.

Yeah, graphics > gameplay is where even makers of 'hardcore' games are going these days
