Late Night Consoling

There's a pretty cool piece over on Wired that talks to three of Japan's videogame luminaries: Eiji Aonomu (Zelda series), Hironobu Sakaguchi (Final Fantasy), and Masahiro Sakurai (Kirby, Meteos). Sakurai, who was previously at Nintendo, said something rather thought-provoking: "When I was little," he said, "what I loved about games was the absurdity; their complete separation from the real world. Here, when I hold a pencil, it drops to the table when I let it go. But in the games I played when I was young, the pencil would just float. That's the kind of thing I used to love. But these days, everyone is pursuing realism. When a soldier jumps, he only jumps the height that a normal human could. Not several feet in the air. I enjoy games that are not realistic in that way. So when you punch somebody in Smash Bros., he goes flying." I'm just glad that there are developers out there that are children at heart. I've noticed a lot of gamers that have grown older now prefer a Forza Motorsport or Battlefield 2 over anything fantastical in nature, such as God of War or Conker: Live & Reloaded. Sometimes it's good to go back to your roots.

  • Microsoft Games on DS, PSP?

    [xbox] [ds] [psp]

The latest rumor to hit the Internet surrounds the Xbox 360's connectivity with competitor's products. At this past E3, Microsoft teased audience members at their media briefing that the Xbox 360 could interact with products from their competitors, such as Sony's PSP and Apple's iPod. A rumor today suggests that with the PSP and DS, games from Microsoft could be downloaded to those systems for play. I'd say take this one with a bucket of salt; I'm sure neither Sony or Nintendo would allow such an action to take place without approval.

  • Zelda DS to Make Liberal Use of Stylus

    [ds]

No, there won't be a Howard Dean-branded stylus to use with Zelda DS; it's just that the man in charge of the Zelda series, Eiji Aonuma, has told Wired that in the upcoming Zelda game for the Nintendo DS, movement will be primarily handled by the touch screen and stylus. Since he did mention the stylus, this would rule out control via the thumbpad. Could it be like Diablo where you point-n-click for movement and tap for attack?

  • Revolution Rumors Hit the Web

    [nintendo]

A plethora of rumors surrounding the Nintendo Revolution have the flooded the Internet the past few days. First there's this story that has photographic evidence of the Revolution's controllers. Well, that one has already been completely falsified, so boo-urns. Then there's this, a supposed ad for the console set to combat the Xbox 360's launch. This is said to be leaked by Nintendo PR. The final rumor is this diddy, which is a discovered Nintendo patent. The patent covers tilt-technology and batteries and LCD screens in a controller. Closer inspection revealed it's from 2003 and most likely not related to the controller at all. Sorry guys, you're just going to have to wait until Nintendo is good and ready to talk!
