Late Night Consoling

It wasn't until I looked at the list of Nintendo's published titles that I realized what a brilliant maneuver this is by the Big N. We all know Nintendo is responsible for a boatload of classics, but until you see them all side-by-side, it's hard to imagine how many they have. Kid Icarus, Punch-Out, Earthbound, F-Zero, Super Mario RPG, Yoshi's Island, 1080 Snowboarding, GoldenEye 007, Killer Instinct, all of the console Marios and Zeldas and so many more. All of those games, at your fingertips, and Nintendo is even thinking about making them free to download. I'm sure there some out there saying, "Who cares if they release any new games if I can get access to all those!"
  • The List: Nintendo's Downloadable Games for Revolution

    [nintendo]

Speaking to Famitsu, Nintendo confirmed that all of their published NES, SNES, and N64 games will be available for download. While the magazine didn't offer a complete list of the games, some gamers have compiled lists of their own. The number of released titles appears to be ranging between 214 and 221, but in any case, here's the one IGN has up. They're quick to point out that in the end, some titles won't make it such as Banjo Kazooie as Rare holds the license on that.

  • Studios Bidding on Halo Movie Script

    [xbox]

Most of the major picture studios received the Halo script today and they are currently engaging in a bidding war for the rights to make the movie. Microsoft tapped 28 Days Later writer Alex Garland to pen the movie adaptation and had messengers dressed as the Master Chief to hit up each studio with the script. The studios were to read it over lunch and place bids in the afternoon. According to Defamer.com, those privy to info on the script say it's a dud. Hmm, a Hollywood insider saying a game adaptation script is a "horrible?" Considering they're the peeps responsible for Alone in the Dark and House of the Dead, maybe that's a good thing!

  • Ninja Gaiden Black to Sell at $29.99

    [xbox]

Tecmo confirmed today that Ninja Gaiden Black for the Xbox will retail at $29.99. A Tecmo rep told GameSpot to not be fooled by its value price. "I don't want you to think that NGB is going to be a cheap re-make of NG because Team Ninja has been working their butts off to completely revamp the game from the ground up and adding loads of new stuff," the rep said.

  • New Donkey Kong for Revolution

    [nintendo]

Not necessarily surprising news, but it's the first we've heard of it. Nintendo confirmed to Famitsu that a Donkey Kong title is being developed for the Revolution. Absolutely no specifics were given, so it's up in the air if its a platformer, another Donkey Konga, or something completely different.

  • A New Wreckless Game in the Works?

    [xbox]

Just yesterday I was thinking, "Hmm, how come they didn't make a sequel to Wreckless?" It was one of the Xbox's first big titles but never was any mention of a sequel muttered.. until now. IGN discovered on a Japanese retail site a listing for Double S.T.E.A.L. The Second Crush. Well, it so happens to be that Wreckless was called Double S.T.E.A.L. in Japan. However, it has an August 4 release date and a reduced price tag. Maybe it's not a sequel and just a re-release?

  • Capcom Ports Two Oldies to PSP

    [psp]

Capcom announced its plan to port both Mega Man Legends and Breath of Fire 3 to the PSP. Both were previously released on the PlayStation and Nintendo 64. The version of Mega Man Legends is actually a reworked version of the N64 title released here in the states. This was Mega Man's first foray into 3D. Both are set to ship sometime in August.

Alec, until we get confirmation directly from Nintendo on the free downloads it might be a good idea to downplay that concept.

Nintendo doesn't really seem to be downplaying it. Here's what their VP of corporate affairs, Perrin Kaplan, has said about it:

"For Revolution and accessing older games, we haven't finalized how we will structure it yet. It is possible that players will enjoy these games without a charge from Nintendo, or there may be some pay structure for accessing the actual product. We haven't finalized it yet. Our goal is to make it as easy and inexpensive as possible, which could be free."

Three sentences, mentioned twice that they could be free.

I don't. But it is exciting they're at least considering it.

Nintendo usually holds their cards pretty close to their chest. If they're talking about this being an option to media outlets then it has a large possibility of actually happening.

That said, if their system is really funky this might be a great offset to get people to purchase a system so more third-parties jump on the bandwagon. Who knows though.

I'm betting its going to be some sort of subscription thing. Seriously.. they should go the Xbox Live route and do a basic multiplayer deal thats free for anyone and a premium pay deal. The premium would offer downloadble classic games (free) as well as a subscription to Nintendo Power. This would be my course of action if I were in charge there.

True, but with all the referencing and re-referencing to that article that claims that they will be free now might not be the best time to fuel it.

All Alec said was that there was a possibility. "...and Nintendo is even thinking about making them free to download." Key word there is "thinking." There's no reason to downplay it since Nintendo is consistently chatting about it. It's very exciting news and I'm glad Alec brought it to our attention.

If nintendo charges me $1/game, i am fucking sold.

if nintendo were smart, they'd do something like this:

              1st party games: 3.99
              2nd party games: 1.99

It's not Alec's job to protect Nintendo's image. If they end up charging per game and looking bad in the process because they tantalized gamers with free downloads, then it's no one's fault but their own. If they weren't able to hold that promise, then they're the ones held accountable, not the journalists who reported on stated public intentions.

"If they weren't able to hold that promise..."

This is the exact thing I was talking about. Someone makes a reference that it might be possible to do (from either a technical or financial standpoint) and people take it as a promise from the host company.

This is not something Nintendo has promised. All they have said up to this point is that they are evaluating the possible ways in which they could handle this venture.

Seems to me you're saying we, especially Alec, shouldn't talk or discuss it because it might not be true. Commenting on a rumor or speculation that Nintendo started btw, doesn't seem to be a mistake or a waste of time or whatever _fill in the blank_. :)

I don't really see the problem here.

Thats not what I meant. I just feel that in the wake of that article claiming that the downloads will be free that now would be a bad time to bring it up.

Cause it looks like he just wants to start some shit. The Original Post has no merit. Alec's job is to report game news. This is news worthy. It's not for sure, and Alec stated that. Nintendo is a big boy, you don't need to babysit it.

Alec never said they will, and what Alec did say would, under ordinary circumstances be, be perfectly fine.

I've purposely avoided linking to one of the articles that claims that the games will be downloaded for free, as they have no confirmation and take quotes from interviews out of context, until now.

Articles like this one http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000843045537/ (they all seem to be based off a gamesradar.com article that appeared 13 days ago) have been cropping up all over the place recently. They all refer back to an interview Mr. Harrison did with Gamespot in which he said that in the past Nintendo has given away old games for free with preorders and the like. Never once in the interview did he mention that the old games will be for free. He does make mention of possible first party content available for free, or free bonus downloads of 3rd party games with the purchase of a new game - but everything he says about free downloads is out of the context of the older games.

As Alec has said Nintendo still appears to be evaluating the different options it has available, and I would be ecstatic if the NES/SNES/N64 first party library was available for free download - its just not a confirmed reality yet. And while Alec did say they are thinking about making them free (which, again, is completely true), in the wake of these articles it might be a good idea to let the concept simmer for a little.

                        Thats all I'm saying.
