Late Night Consoling

63
I didn't quite expect such a strong reaction to the "Death of PC Gaming" article. Of course, it was pretty silly to say PC gaming will die in the near future. PC gaming will never die; however, it can continue to decline and if the author approached it from that angle, I'd think he'd have a credible argument. I feel the reason we keep hearing about the eventual death of PC gaming is because every generation, consoles are slowly catching up to the PC in terms of power. With the past generation, the Xbox was comparable to a rather decent gaming rig, but it was still nowhere near as powerful as a top-of-the-line system. However, beginning with the Xbox 360, these consoles will eclipse desktops in gaming performance. It seems likely that the PC will be the home for certain genres, such as the RTS, FPS, and MMO, but as consoles mature, you'll see a few titles releasing on both platforms as opposed to remaining PC-only. And let's not forgot the whole price factor. In the end, it's nothing to get worked up over. I can't imagine PC gaming deteriorating away into nothing; we'll just have two different ways to game and until mass-convergence arrives, if ever, this is how things will be for a while.
  • Miyamoto Talks Revolution

    [nintendo]

Speaking to CNN/Money's Chris Morris, Nintendo and gaming legend Shigeru Miyamoto explained the driving factor behind the Revolution. "The Revolution will use cutting edge technology, but it's ultimately about how that technology is used," he said. "We asked ourselves 'why would a family need or want to have a gaming console?' The answer is what's driving development of the Revolution." He confessed that there aren't many games these days he'd like to play. He's hoping with Revolution, developers will create genres instead of rehashing gameplay styles.

  • Nintendogs Responsible for Surging DS Sales

    [ds]

When Nintendogs was recently released in Japan, it spurred on a buying-frenzy of the Nintendo DS hardware. From GameSpot: "The Nintendo DS was trailing the PSP and PS2 the week before the release of Nintendogs, selling 21,698 units against 28,950 PSP units and 30,572 PS2 units. But when Nintendogs arrived, DS sales exploded to 96,191 units, outselling both the PSP (33,004) and the PS2 (33,080) combined. Sales of the DS are starting to settle down now, but as of the week of May 16, the DS continued to outsell both the PS2 and the PSP, selling 29,808 units, compared to 27,370 PSP units and 24,122 PS2 units."

  • The Faces of the Xbox 360

    [xbox]

The UK website for the Xbox 360 is asking gamers to pick their favorite faceplate out of nine available designs. Click here to see the faceplates. As you can see, the designs are rather modern in style. (I voted for organism) Also out there is this side-by-side comparison of the Xbox 360 and the original Xbox.

give me a keyboard, mouse and a hdd, and id make the next gen console my main rig. Why not? it's going to be way more powerful than my desktop and the laptop i got a few months ago and much cheaper. If the same games come out then what's the point.

And the #1 plus, as it has always been is you don't have to worry about stuttering performance (at least 99% of the time) with a console, if the game is made for it then it will run at full speed with all the intended effects turned on.

That's the main reason I'm picking up some titles for xbox instead of pc these days.
