Late Night Consoling

53
This past weekend has just been a treasure trove for Xbox 360 rumors. My head is spinning from trying to keep up. There's actually another one over at Spong that says a new feature of Xbox Live will be the replacement of computer AI with humans. Meaning, in your singleplayer game of Perfect Dark Zero, you can opt to have some of the enemies to be controlled by an actual person. Too weird to be to true? We'll see; their source is a leaked script from E3. It was quite interesting to see IGN claim Halo 2.5 is real. That seemed pretty far-fetched, but who knows; it definitely sounds ingenious, a sure-fire way to have the hard drive add-on sell. However, after the Halo GBA debacle, who knows if we can trust their Halo rumors. Almost there, people!
  • New Info on New Zelda

    [gcn]

The latest issue of Nintendo Power has a handful of new information regarding the upcoming Legend of Zelda on the GameCube. There will be no voice acting. Zelda and Gannon are in the game. No GBA connectivity. The game will have a significant item, like the ocarina or wind baton. Link can communicate with animals. And finally, the story begins with Link being sent out to an annual meeting of neighboring villages.

  • Xbox 360 to Feature Embedded DRAM

    [xbox]

It was confirmed today at WinHEC that the next-gen Xbox will feature embedded DRAM from NEC Electronics. The eDRAM is essentially an on-chip memory cache for the graphics processor unit. By being on-chip as opposed to off-chip, it will offer much faster speed and memory bandwidth. The main function of the eDRAM is to provide anti-aliasing and HD capabilities at a little to none performance hit.

  • PSP Launch Date Confirmed for Europe

    [psp]

Finally, after the portable saw release in both North America and Japan, Europeans now know when they'll get the handheld from Sony. September 1 is the date and like the U.S., they'll be forced to buy it in a proprietary bundle. Yes, the Value Pack returns except this time, Spider-Man 2 isn't included in the box. If you want that, you'll have to register the device on SCEE's website. The PSP Value Pack is priced at 179 pounds or 249 Euros.

  • Namco Working on a Brawler

The latest ish of Famitsu revealed that Namco is working on a street-fighting brawler called Urban Reign. Members from both teams working on the Tekken and Soul Calibur series will be contributing to this title, which is focused on urban gang warfare. Four players can play at once and use combo maneuvers. Over 60 characters are selectable and up to 80 different moves are available for use. No platforms were specified.

  • Windows Longhorn to Support Xbox 360 Controllers

    [xbox]

Another tidbit that came out of WinHEC is that the next-gen Windows will support the next-gen Xbox controllers. Currently codenamed Longhorn, the new OS will natively support the controllers, but since there isn't any official information on the controllers as of yet, Microsoft did not state how they would connect with the PC.

thats pretty hot that the XBox 360 controllers will connect to your PC and work on Longhorn. My guess is they release a USB adapter or something simular.

they'd be kinda cool, except I can see this costing me 20-30 bucks for this adapter. :(

I bought an adapter for my xbox controllers for PC for $8, and a PS2 one for $10. This news is nothing special really, cause I bet there would be third party devices anyway.

You can make one now by splicing a USB connector into the break-away part of the controller ccord (so you can plug it into either Xbox or PC).. and downloading some XP drivers that work really well.

That would be pretty cool, but isn't it kinda similar to the whole IE thing that got microsoft in trouble earlier?

how so.. its not like they are forcing you to use the XBox 360 controller on Windows Longhorn. LOL

or making it the only option available.. I think they are just making it possible and will ship drivers with the OS to allow u to use the controller.

They weren't forcing you to use IE either. It just came packaged on the system and was highly integrated into it. It's using there position as OS leader (read: monopoly) to muscle in on other industries. Think about it, if you owned a xbox 360 (uggh, it's gonna take awhile before saying that doesn't leave a bad taste in my mouth) and a version of Longhorn why would you ever buy another PC controller (unless you were very picky and/or enjoyed spending 20-50 on a device you already own).

      i thought they were wireless?

do you mean a usb RF receiver?

Yea the controllers are wireles.. Probably just a wireless USB HUB you plug into your comp.

Remember guys, Microsoft's XNA promises to allow Xbox 360 and PC users to play games together if it's a multi-platform and they coded for that ;)

        Can't wait :D :D

Also, for those that complained they enjoy Splinter Cell games with Xbox controller can get their wish for next-gen :)

where did you read that? (about xbox playing vs pc users)

        • reply
          April 26, 2005 9:37 PM

no they didn't promise PC & XBox users would be able to play together.

They said they think each platform has strenghts that suit themselves so it may not be the best to cross platform the systems. They also said they would consider it and look into it but nowhere did they say they would do this.

it would be awesome if the controllers/console itself used USB, but then stupid people would try to plug in everything USB to the console

        a) controllers will be wireless b) the xbox controller ports are already USB, they just have special connectors (you can mod the console so that they are reagular USB ports and plug whatever you want into them you sick fuck).

Having a defacto standard for PC gamepads would be nice. Right now every game has to be written to cope with lots of totally different pads. You might buy one with 50 sticks and sliders and 200 buttons and not be able to use it as you want, and even when you can you have to spend time confiruing the X Y Z BLAH axis to do what you want, assuming you can remember which is which...

I think it's best to have game developers able to design their control system around one good controller.
