I sent my resume to this company when I was in school 3 years ago. I recieved a response like, "if you want to work for us be prepaired to work long hours at little to no money!" I basicly stoped my game industry search there. Working in the industry has little apeal to me. I have a college roomate that works on games and has been for like 4-5 years. He works for a top 5 game company (it starts with an A) He makes about half what I do as a software engineer doing corprate type work and he works 50-60 hours a week.

From what I've seen ( I have 3 college friends who work in the game industry all for big name companies) the average sallary will be about 25-50% less then an equivalent experienced regular software engineer.

If you are picking a career based on amount of work vs pay, the game industry isn't for you. I think most people in the industry have worked on games prior and know that they don't want to be doing anything but games. Its something you do for the love of it. If you want a 9-5 job that pays well, stear clear.

But I do think there is potential to make some bank in games. Depends on the company but royalties can pay off big and bonuses for shipping titles are potentially huge.

You can't live comfortable on 60k a year for the rest of your life. I'm a Sr software engineer now, and i'm hope to become a project manager and then on to whatever. Money = secuirty = higher quality of life. Its very important to me that my wife can take care of my children, that I live where I want to live and that I can maintain my life style. None of that would be possible if I worked in the game industry.

Corporate type work - I can't think of anything more awful.
