I have been looking towards something like this since I want to get into MMORPG but I don't like fantasy types like WoW or FFXI. EVE really didn't float my boat because I was literally paying $5 a month to "train" my character. After I set them to train I didn't play because certain aspects of the game required that skill or I wanted it to be able to go on missions.

    Saga of Ryzom! Currently playing it and enjoying the hell out of it. Not quite fantasy or sci-fi - good mix of both as far as the setting goes. The skill based system is a definate plus too. Just wish more people played it :(
