Steam Update
A new update for Steam has been released, updating both the application itself, the Source engine in general and the Half-Life 1 Dedicated Server. As always you have to restart Steam to get the update.

replyis it just me that feels that steam should be able to look for updates say once a day at random to find updates then apply them? having to restart it whenever i see an article here (thanks) that steam has updated, it's a big PITA.

yes i leave it running, not like it's going to eat up all my ram or anything, just like i leave almost everything else open that i use often.
and when i want to play, i want to play now, not in 5 minutes after it finishes updating.
you also have to concider the general user that just plays games but has no clue on much else, have you seen the system tray on some of those computer? nothing is ever closed.-
You're right that it is a little strange that it only looks for updates on start up. I mean you'd only have to check once an hour for an improvement.

once an hour would be a little excesive, but once a day i think would be fine

it wouldn't be that excessive. it wouldn't require much data transfer at all

all it has to do is check for updates - it can then give the option to actually update.
