MSNBC on Columbine

1

Well, watching MSNBC TV as I'm so apt to do, they had a special report on Doom and "other media related" stuff that may have driven Eric and Dylan to the massacre. This report isn't on the MSNBC website, so here's the gist of all of it. They showed some gameplay of Doom and then introducted a Lt. Col. Maginnis who is their expert for the story. The reporter actually tells him that one of the kids named his shotgun "Arlene" after a character in Doom. If anyone remembers a character named Arlene in the game, let me know :). He shrugged it off and she (the reporter) asked if the games should be banned. He answered an emphatic no and that the games now have ratings on them including Blood, Gore, Violence, and that the sole responsibility is on the heads of the parents. He said that simulation in the army is only one step in the training to kill, though he doesn't like that any kid any age can go to an arcade and have a simulator as good as any in the army. The other steps include actually getting out in the field with other men and firing blanks or using lasers. That is a crucial step in training men to kill and your average person will not have the will or training to kill by simulation alone. As for "other media," they didn't seem to get to that. Note by Steve: It looks like the Arlene aka Charlene name came from a BOOK instead of the actual PC game Doom. I'll be starting a campaign to ban all books and 'stomp out literacy' next week along with the comment #41 guy.
