Late Night Consoling
Here comes that whirlwind of activity I alluded to earlier in the week, such as tonight we see some of the first hands-on and gameplay videos of PSP titles. In regards to the Tokyo Game Show, I'll be a bit more lenient with the Japanese-only content. Things are so speculative right now about what is and what isn't coming to the US that I may feel inclined to link to some media or discuss newly announced titles that are feasibly traveling stateside. I anticipate working overtime Monday evening as TGS takes place over the weekend, although we'll get a good deal of pre-TGS stuff Thursday and Friday evening.
New Wanda & The Colossus Details In an interview with Japanese press, Wanda & The Colossus game designer Fumito Ueda and producer Kenji Kaido helped clarify some details regarding the game. The key facts are that Wanda is not a playable character; she's a girl who has lost her soul and you play the boy of the story who is out to find her soul. To do so, he must conquer the "Colossus," which are giant lumbering creatures. The boy will mount the beasts and find their weak spots. Kaido also explained why they did not chose to make a sequel to Ico; He said the group discussed a "sequel, but here, there was some opposition to that, along the lines of Ico being more than complete both in terms of gameplay and story, thus making production of a sequel very difficult, and also questions about whether users actually wanted a sequel. After much consideration, we decided to try a new game."
Downloadable Content for Full Spectrum Warrior Pandemic and THQ announced today that they plan to release two new levels for the true-life simulation Full Spectrum Warrior. Being released a month apart, the first level will be available on October 4 and the update will be called Full Spectrum Warrior: Epilogue 1. The level, which will be a search and destroy mission, takes place about two hours after the end of the original game.
Two New DS Titles A couple new titles for the Nintendo DS were revealed these past two days. First, Tecmo will release a new game in the Monster Rancher series, Jamboree, which will put a focus on traditional RPG elements. The innovative features of the DS will be used. Activision announced today they plan to have a Spider-man 2 title ready for the US launch of the DS, which will be developed by Vicarious Visions. Activision's Kathy Vrabeck commented, "The nature of the dual-screen technology allows us to deliver more interactive and intuitive gameplay experiences on the hand-held than ever before."
Take-Two Taking Juiced? GameSpot is reporting tonight that Take-Two Interactive has come to a tentative agreement for the publishing rights of Juiced. The deal is worth up to $10 million for the PC, PS2, and Xbox rights, depending if the game sells well. Acclaim, who declared bankruptcy a few weeks ago, will not see the money. Most will go to Fund4Games, the company that actually funded Juiced, and the rest goes to GMAC, which Acclaim still owes about $23 million.
Californian Videogame Bill About to Become Law The Californian senate has approved the bill AB 1793 which would require game stores to predominately display the ESRB rating system and make readily available brochures on the system. Governor Schwarzenegger signed the bill into law. The bill's sponsor, Democrat Leland Yee, stated, "I am hopeful the Governor will keep his promise to protect California's children and sign this legislation warning parents of video game content. More needs to be done to help parents make good choices about which games are appropriate for children."
Tork Rises From the Dead After being dumped by Microsoft Game Studios last year, the Tiwak developed Tork: Prehistoric Punk has been officially announced to be released by Ubisoft in October for a budget price of $19.99. The game was heavily hyped back when it was associated with MGS as it was being developed by ex-Rayman 2 personnel. Ubisoft acquired the development house, Tiwak, in January of this year and finally made the decision to go ahead with Tork earlier today.
