Rome: Total War GONE GOLD
We received an Activision press release, announcing that Rome: Total War has been released to manufacturing and thus has gone gold. Creative Assembly's newest strategy game will be shipping to North American stores September 22.
Rome: Total War features groundbreaking technology that brings the epic, cinematic battles of the Roman era to life with graphics and gameplay beyond anything previously seen in a PC game. Players will be transported to the battlefields of ancient history's greatest conflicts and control mighty armies. Up to 10,000 fully polygonal, highly detailed, motion-captured warriors can appear on the screen at once. They control vast armies led by history's most legendary generals including Julius Caesar and Hannibal, and must use a combination of brains and brawn to successfully conquer the Roman Empire. uh oh - whenever a game 'conveniently' goes gold a week or so before the forecasted shipping date in the last quarter of the year, it means that the publisher (not the developer) decided the game was done.
it'll still probably be very good, but don't be surprised if there's a 1.1 patch available by the time the game is actually in stores.-

It is not a 'practice' really, keep in mind the publisher has certain deadlines too. Did you know that you have to reserve a time slot for the printing of your CDs? And they do this months ahead and if they miss their spot it could push the title back 3 to 6 months even though its ready AND cost them more money. Not to mention advertising, budget predictions. If they extend development just a little bit it could push them over budget and that really messes with their finacial quarterlies.
Plus a developer sends off a Release Canadate and may find a few bugs on their end, but the publisher doesn't or sees them and as long as they are non critical then green lights it. Some publishers are pretty stricter but in general the PC side of this is no where near the console side. Sony, Nintendo and MS are REALLY anal about RC's. Inbetween RC's the dev is still going down the bug list and they could have even sent a newer RC but the publisher already sent off RC1 so the new RC just becomes a patch and is released on day one in stores. Thats normally the cause for day one patches.
