Wtf, it looks like they enabled bump mapping on the NVIDIA cards or something, notice the difference between map textures in the 9600XT vs the 5700 Ultra:

    LOL, while I did go ATI the last time, I was disappointed with the stability of their drivers. ATI isn't a bad company, Nvidia's just better.

  woah, I thought it would be reversed. well I'm glad my 5900xt is holding up to the comptetion quite well. I will try this when HL2 is available.

    it was enabled in the latest source update on my crappy 4600 as well.
    
    lowered my FPS some too. to enable/disable it use the console command mat_bumpmap

  just looks a bit more contrasty with the nvidia drivers. not a real big difference.
