City of Heroes Wrap Report

There's a City of Heroes wrap report on RPG Vault, in which lead designer Jack Emmert talks about the development of the superheroes MMORPG and the lessons learned by the developers at Cryptic Studios.

Don't really want to spend the time right now to read it. I'll probably end up scanning it when I get home.

    But I have one question...

What did they admit to doing wrong? I think they did a lot right, but I think they did a huge amount of things wrong. However, judging soley from the communication they had before release, I wouldn't expect them to admit they did anything wrong.

Now I've talked myself into reading it...just to satisfy my curiousity.

      Okay, I read it.

There's nothing wrong with it...it seems like a simple and frank promotion of their game. There's nothing controversial or deceiptful about it.

      Nothing very interesting either. :)

What I was looking for was more in the 'what went wrong' department. I was also looking for a lot of the 'what we wanted to do, but couldn't' stuff.

Mostly he said they did everything right, and the one thing they didn't do right they are going to fix with expansion packs during the first year.

He certainly doesn't see the same problems I do. :)

You have to read between the lines. He actually hints at a few things that went wrong during the development. He doesn't outright say "the implementation of this (item) was bad", but there are clues in his statements.

As a point of curiousity, I'm wondering what you think they did wrong with the game?

Obviously it doesn't appeal to everyone (it's a far more casual MMO than the more hardcore norm), but I think the launch and running of the game was/is pretty successful, and the game is certainly a lot of fun.

There's some clear places for improvement (like the article mentioned, activities other than fighting), but at the same time, the core of the game is well excuted and of a high enough "fun quality" to be worth the montly fee in my opinion.

I'm not going to pretend there's no flaws, because no game (in particular MMOs) is perfect, but I'm not sure I see/understand all the "problems" you see. Care to elaborate?
