Late Night Consoling
I promised I wouldn't post a full write-up until next week, so I'll refrain from doing so until then, but I did indeed get a chance to go hands-on with Nokia's N-Gage phone/game system, and I can sum it all up with one word: craptacular. There, that ought to hold you over until I get this muzzle taken off, don't you think? Since I can't actually talk about the N-Gage, and it's a slow night, I might as well spark another discussion. Here's my question for all of you: you've seen a lot of talk lately about the future of handheld gaming, but what do you actually want? Is the GBA SP perfection? Is the PSP, with its ability to watch movies and dual 802.11b and Bluetooth (for online and short range multiplayer respectively) overkill? And here's an important question, as I've just spent time with the first real attempt at doing so: can 3D work on a tiny screen and limited controls or will 2D always be the better option? One last part: if you could have a truly handheld version of any console (not a sort-of-portable like the PSOne, but a real, compact one like the Nomad or Turbo Express), what would it be?
I give up. Is it a console or not? This is where I was going to post that last night's story about the PS2 being declared a computer was in fact a misunderstanding, as this Inquirer story points out, but it turns out that that story was a misunderstanding, and the PS2 really was declared a computer, and Sony really is applying for customs refunds based on the court's decision. Or at least, that's my current understanding of the situation. If you've got evidence to the contrary (aside from Gran Turismo, that is) feel free to point it my way.
Mission: Impossible Delayed on GameCube It's not actually canceled (unlike some other titles from the same publisher) but nonetheless Atari announced today that they have pushed the GameCube port of Mission: Impossible: Operation Surma into 2004. The PS2 and Xbox versions are still scheduled for release this holiday season.
Winning Eleven Q&A The soccer-loving screwballs over at Computer and Video Games have conducted an appropriately enthusiastic interview with Shingo Takatsuka, the producer and "overlord" of Winning Eleven, which is known in Europe as Pro Evolution Soccer. Among other things, he mentions that online play hasn't been ruled out for the next game in the series (although it's much more likely for the PC version than the PS2 port).
Sony Teams up with P.O.D. Sony and Atlantic Records announced today that the upcoming album "Payable on Death" from P.O.D. will include a bonus PS2 disc, that will include among other things, a custom Amplitude track (featuring a song not on the album) and a fifty-minute behind-the-scenes documentary on the making of the album.
Prince of Persia Interview As the latest in their series of features about the upcoming cross-platform title Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, IGN has posted an interview with David Chateauneuf, the game's lead designer.
Xbox Media Center Beta You'll need a hacked Xbox to actually use it, but a beta version of the Xbox Media Center has been released. This is a pretty cool open-source initiative dedicated to turning your console into a full-fledged media center. But again, you'll need to hack your Xbox to actually do anything with it.
Fatal Frame Movie News There's been some movement in Hollywood on the proposed movie based on the survival horror/safari game Fatal Frame...John Rogers, whose last release was The Core, has been named as the screenwriter on the project, and while he's not actually directing the project, Stephen Spielberg is working with him in some capacity. Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly will be released for PS2 in November.
New Sega of America President Over in the business world there was a bit of news today, as Hideaki Irie was named as the new president and COO of Sega of America. Irie comes to Sega from Agetec, where he was a founder and president, and prior to that he worked as ASCII Software for six years.
