Late Night Consoling
So how about last night's Square Enix news, huh? I must say, like many of you I'm sure, I am very disappointed that Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is a direct-to-DVD movie and not a full-fledged sequel or remake of the original game. In their coverage of the formal announcement of the project today, GameSpot mentions a few new details, as well as mentioning that the reason Square isn't working on a remake of the game is that the PSOne title is still completely playable on current hardware, meaning they can still sell the original, sans-modifications of any kind. This, and the fact that the movie is expected to be a mere 60 minutes long, says to me that it will more than likely be released in a two-pack with the original game. Or at least, that's my guess for how it's going to be released in this country, where a 60 minute movie is going to be a tough sell by itself. Much more encouraging was the news about the two new Kingdom Hearts games, and GameSpot has some more details on these as well, including some plot tidbits. Still unknown is what Disney movies will be featured in these games, which should make for some fun speculation. So much ground was covered in the original game that it's going to be difficult for them to find completely untouched movies. Still, I'm betting that The Lion King, which was barely touched in the first game, will play a much bigger role (assuming the Japanese developer can get past the long-standing Kimba: The White Lion charge). One suggestion made on one discussion thread I saw was that Square could tap into the handful of Pixar-developed movies, as they did with Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas. That would be all kinds of fun, and one can only imagine the kind of craziness that would come from Square's interpretations of Toy Story, Monsters Inc., A Bug's Life and Finding Nemo.
Final Fantasy XII Details Soon One thing not revealed at Square Enix's press conference today was Final Fantasy XII, but don't despair, as they did launch ff12.com, a site that currently shows one new piece of concept artwork and a teaser for a full unveiling of the game that is scheduled for November 19th in Japan. That's really not that far away, and the image that is there shows a lot of promise. Stay tuned.
Front Mission Online Announced, Final Fantasy, DQ on 3G One more Square Enix story for you tonight...Square announced Front Mission Online, a new PS2 and Windows online 'mech combat game, which IGN called "drab looking" and described as looking like MechAssault (only you can pilot tanks as well as mechs). Like Final Fantasy XI, the game will allow players on both platforms to interact with each other. Also announced were plans to offer versions of Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest on NTT DoCoMo's 3G mobile phones.
King of Fighters 2003 Announced The game probably won't be released until next year, but that sort of thing has never deterred SNK before...at TGS SNK Playmore confirmed that their new King of Fighters arcade game will be released under the moniker KoF 2003. Contrary to rumors, the game will run on the Atomiswave hardware developed by Sammy and Sega instead of the traditional Neo Geo MVS. A PS2 specific KoF will follow, which will indeed be 3D. A pre-rendered CGI trailer was shown at TGS, which will hopefully hit the web soon to satisfy all you Neo Geo freaks.
Wireless GBA Revealed Despite some vague information being inadvertently leaked earlier this month, Nintendo made their formal announcement today of a wireless multiplayer add-on for the GBA and GBA SP that was co-developed with Motorola. The device runs on the 2.4 GHz frequency (which is also used by many devices, including microwaves) and allows up to five people to play without cables of any kind. What's worth noting is that they mention the new Pokemon games as being the first to support the device, although it's not clear if this is just marketing on their part or if the device won't automatically work with existing multiplayer GBA games.
Metal Gear Solid: TTS, MGS3, Xenosaga II Footage Care of IGN (warning: shaky cam footage) here are the two TGS movies PS2 fans want to see the most: the new trailers from Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Bose. Also available is the new (spoiler filled!!) trailer from Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (mirrored at CVG and Games Are Fun). Happy downloading.
Pac-Man Vs. Revealed Nintendo today released the first concrete details regarding their release plans for Pac-Man Vs., the wacky multiplayer GameCube/GBA game that was shown untitled at E3 back in May. The game will be available in three ways: with Namco's Pac-Man World 2, as a pre-order bonus for the GameCube version of I-Ninja, and as a bonus with all GameCube versions of R: Racing Evolution.
GTA3 Selling Well in Japan Maybe those Japanese like the violence as much as us barbaric westerners...according to The Magic Box, Capcom has announced that they have sold 74,376 copies of their initial 100,000 copy run of the Japanese edition of Grand Theft Auto 3 in the first 24 hours of its release.
New Tenchu, Chrome Hound Announced From Software has announced two new titles at TGS: Tenchu Kurenai, a new entry in the Tenchu series for PS2 that won't been seen until TGS 2004 (so it's a ways off), and Chrome Hound: Age of Arms, an Xbox 'mech action game that looks an awful lot like Armored Core (but isn't) and fully supports Xbox Live.
Amped 2 Interview HomeLAN's Amped 2 interview talks with Brenner Adams, the co-designer of Microsoft's upcoming snowboarding game that moves the series on to Xbox Live in a big way.
Fire Warrior Interview Computer and Video Games has a new interview with David Millard of Kuju online tonight, talking with the lead designer about their FPS Warhammer 40,000: Fire Warrior.
From SquareSoft to Microsoft Microsoft's division has announced that they have hired Yoshihiro Maruyama, the one-time COO of SquareSoft to lead their Japanese Xbox unit, where he'll be working directly under Peter Moore, the one-time head of Sega of America. This is yet another earnest attempt on Microsoft's part to get some recognition in Japan, and it's a smart one.
Misc. Media/Previews Obviously the big stuff tonight is all TGS related, so for that I point you to GameSpot, IGN's GameCube, PS2 and Xbox sites, GameInformer and GameSpy. On the non-TGS front, there's still a bit to see: GameSpot has a new hands-on look at Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (GC, PS2, Xbox) and a look at the cities of Project Gotham Racing 2 (Xbox). Pocket.IGN seems to have been left home, so they've got new images from Batman: Rise of Sin Tzu and a hands-on with Super Mario Bros. 3's e-Reader support (both GBA, of course). Elsewhere, GameSpy has new shots from the Xbox port of Grand Theft Auto 3 and a new preview of Grabbed by the Ghoulies (Xbox), The Magic Box has new shots and details from Square's Ambrosia Odyssey (PS2), CVG has a new look at Rainbow Six 3 (Xbox) and Sony Japan has launched their official Mojib Ribbon site, which is sadly, like the original Vib Ribbon almost certainly going to remain in Japan (this one's highly dependent on Japanese text, so it has an even less chance of coming over here). |
