Late Night Consoling

38
The summer slowdown means I can finally get around to playing some of the games that have been sitting around all year, and I suddenly realized last night I've got a pretty retro couple of months ahead of me. I'm currently playing Final Fantasy I, but after that, I've got lots more retro fun lined up, as I've still got the other half of Final Fantasy Origins, I have Final Fantasy Chronicle on its way to me (thank you eBay!), I've still got the bulk of the Phantasy Star Collection left (and now that I have a GBA player I'll probably finally devote some time to it), and even the other games on my stack aren't too new, with Munch's Oddysee and The Thing awaiting me. The closest thing I've got to a new game is Zelda: The Wind Waker, which I'll get to soon enough I'm sure. Of course, there's a very good possibility that I'll wind up picking up Star Wars: KOTOR and devote far too much time to that, and who can forget about Soul Calibur II next month? Everyone always talks about their summer reading list, but who cares about that...what's on your gaming list this summer?

GameCube F-Zero Update -- No LAN Play
Late last night IGN posted a retraction to their story posted earlier, saying that they had been contacted by a spokesperson for Nintendo, who confirmed that while LAN play had originally been a planned feature, it will not be in the shipping version of the game. Oh well. On a more positive note, GameSpot has new previews of F-Zero GX and its arcade counterpart F-Zero AX, Gamers.com has some new details on how the two games will connect via a memory card and IGN has a report on a Nintendo/Sega press conference that was probably the source for the items on the previous two sites.
GameCube GameBoy Advance It's official: GBA required for FF:CC Multiplayer
IGN is reporting that Nintendo of Japan has at long last definitively explained how necessary it is to connect a GBA to Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles. According to their news item, single player can be played three ways: with no GBA, with a GBA as a controller, and with a GBA and GameCube controller in tandem. For multiplayer however, each player must have a connected GBA. The game will ship with a GBA connection cable to make this easier.

Midway Sells a Krapload of Kombat
Midway announced today that Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance has sold over 2 million units since being released last November. They don't provide a platform breakdown for sales, but remember this number encompasses all four platforms.
PS2 Metal Gear Solid 3 Spoilers?
Games Are Fun has posted what they claim are serious spoilers revealing the plot of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, which were translated from the Spanish-language site MGLegacy. While their authenticity can't even remotely be verified (it sounds like someone might have made the whole thing up) consider this your hefty spoiler warning just in case.

Miyamoto Lecture Transcript
Video Fenky has translated a transcript of a lecture given by Shigeru Miyamoto at Tokyo University last week. The topics are all general game design, although he does talk about the Pac-Man game that was shown at E3 (he even demos it) and comments briefly on the lukewarm reception Zelda: The Four Swords got at E3, complete with a quip about us Americans and our preference for violent games.

PS2 GameBoy Advance Phantasy Star Interview
Also at Video Fenky is a translation of an interview with Rieko Kodama, who was a designer on the original Phantasy Star way back in the 8-bit days. For those curious in this overlooked classic, it was re-released last year in the Phantasy Star Collection for GBA, and will be published in Japan in the near future as a souped-up remake for PS2 as part of the budget-priced Sega Ages line.

Sega Restructuring
According to GamePro, Sega announced on their Japanese web site today that they are in the process of restructuring their development houses to make it "capable of more effectively producing games with worldwide appeal." Of the current nine development studios, four will be axed, with two more to be created in their place. More details should come out later this month at an online investor's discussion.
GameCube GameCube Co-Op Roundup
Following the similar article that ran on PS2.IGN, Cube.IGN has posted a round-up of the top co-op games available for GameCube. Presumably a similar article will run on Xbox.IGN tomorrow.
Xbox International MechAssault
If you've suddenly noticed an increase in non-English speaking MechAssault players online, there's a reason for that...the game is now fully international, with players from North America, Europe and Japan all playing against each other. The in-game rankings have been updated to reflect this borderless change.

New Releases This Week
This week is pretty dead...all that's shipping tomorrow is Charlie's Angels for GameCube, K-1 World Grand Prix for PS2 and Outlaw Volleyball for Xbox. But it's not all bad news...there's just one week to go until Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic hits the shelves.

Console Game of the Evening: NBA JAM for the Super Nintendo. "To know it was to love it. Despite not having MJ, the game is timeless. The dunks were amazing, the 3-ball required a certain flare, and pushing people down was as good a defense as any basketball game has ever managed." (submitted by Piotyr).

Makes blockbuster fun. If they don't have the Xbox game in, you get a Gamecube, or a PS2, or an N64...while your gf gets a chick flick.
