From a hardcore RTS players perspective:
Its meh. They made some really good changes, and there were a few patches where I thought "wow this is a lot better than vanilla". But now its almost like they've made too many changes. It just doesnt feel right. Theres lots of problems with War3 (mostly dealing with timing and economy) and I just dont think they are fixable with a few balance changes here and there. The problems are deeper and blizzard would need to completely rework the game to fix them. All the armor and attack type changes were a good idea, but it just makes the game feel like its all over the place. They tried to kinda add hard-counters, but they dont really do what they are suppose to. They lowered the gold given from creep and changed the town portals to encourage player interaction, but it still feels like you avoid the other player until one big decisive fight - which is bad for RTS games.-
I've found more and more that if you wait to engage your opponent in TFT, you usually lose. There are so many options that if you aren't losing your tier 1 units in good early battles, your crappy early units will just get mauled by later stuff. There are so many options for how to play now that you can't just stick with the same thing every game, and the only way to know what to play is to engage your opponent early and often.
I think TFT has really reworked WC3, which makes it a different game. I think you may just not be used to it, given how hardcore a WC3 player you used to (?) be. -

Beta testing the game made me lose serious interest in it unfortunately. I'm a hardcore WC3 fan. Hell I still play with my friends almost every night and I used to ladder very often. Some of the TFT changes really just turned me off though. I actually stopped playing a few patches ago when I got sick and tired of AOE dominance. Basically if you like the game for ladder you should probably seriously consider whether you want to spend the cash now for a meh product or wait until it's cheaper. If you just like to casually play I'd say the new units/art/tilesets etc, make it worth the $$$. Maybe not the release date price, but at some point later on. -
