Late Night Consoling
Square, Enix and...Game Arts? Video-Fenky, the blog kept by GamePro's Fennec Fox, has posted some notes from a SquareEnix shareholders conference. While much of it is a bit dry, there is one cool bit of news...it turns out SquareEnix has invested in Game Arts, the creators of such console classics as Grandia and Lunar, and the two companies are working on a new project together.
| More Console Rumors Debunked Also up at Video-Fenky is a translation from an article that ran in this weeks issue of the Japanese magazine Famitsu, in which representatives from Sony, Nintendo, Microsoft, SquareEnix and others respond to some rumors. Some of this has already been printed online elsewhere, but this is the whole article for those that are interested. |
AvP: Extinction Q&A Fan page PlanetAvP has conducted a Q&A with Mike Arkin, the lead producer on the upcoming strategy game Aliens vs. Predator: Extinction. The questions deal with the overall gameplay, storyline and more, and there are naturally some new screenshots to go along with it.
| New Enter the Matrix Codes If you haven't already grabbed everything off GameFAQs, Atari has released a handful of codes you can enter in the game's hacking interface. These do everything from granting unlimited health to opening up a hidden test level and something labeled "multi-player fighting", which may mean a two-player game of some kind. |
Next Tomb Raider Hints Computer and Video Games has posted some quotes from Jeremy Heath-Smith, the co-founder of Core Design, who drops some hints as to what people can expect from the next Tomb Raider game, which is the second in a planned trilogy of titles for PS2 and PC. There's not a whole lot here, but he does say the next game will go back to some of the themes from the original game, including the return of dinosaurs.
GameCube in Hotel Rooms LodgeNet announced today that they will be adding GameCube titles to their "Signeture TV" service for hotels. If you travel regularly, you've probably already seen their existing service, which offers either SNES or N64 titles for a small (cough) fee.
| New Characters in North American Soul Calibur II IGN is reporting that the characters Rock and Hwang will be added to the North American version of Soul Calibur II when it's released here this August. In addition, Lizardman, who was in the Asian release, but not playable, will be a fully selectable character. |
| SSX Interview A new interview with Steven Rechtschaffner of EA Vancouver is up at GameSpot tonight, talking with the executive producer on SSX 3 about their upcoming sequel, as well as the games that came before it. |
Nintendo Tours Again Nintendo has announced the Fusion Tour 2003, said to be "a groundbreaking fusion of music, video gaming and lifestyle." The tour, which features Nintendo games and the music of band Evanescence, kicks off in Los Angeles this August and will visit 25 cities. More information (but not tour dates yet) can be found on the official Fusion Tour site.
Microsoft Lays off 34 Xbox Japan Employees A report on Nikkei Biz Tech (relayed here at GameSpot) tells the scary story of how Microsoft Japan laid off some 34 employees of their Japanese Xbox division. While sudden layoffs and "don't let the door hit you on the way out" tactics are old hat here in the US, in Japan that sort of thing is more shocking, and apparently the newly unemployed workers aren't thrilled about the situation.

Console Game of the Evening: Frenzy for the Colecovision. "Shooting a giant face could make it mad, and it would send mad loads of little bouncy faces at you in revenge! Common, what other game has the coexistence of bouncy faces, robots, and humans?!" (submitted by supamart).
