Late Night Consoling

35
My wife and I have both been on something of a retro kick for the past week or so...she rediscovered the fun that is Super Mario Bros. 3 (via the Super Mario Bros. All Stars SNES cart, not the NES original) last weekend, and when I've been too frustrated to keep playing Splinter Cell, I've been sneaking in a bit of the original Sonic the Hedgehog. Seeing both of these characters again got me thinking about which is the better franchise. As far as I'm concerned there's really no question about which one has the better games...that'd be Mario, hands down. There have been far too many mediocre Sonic games for that to really be a contest, and I've yet to see a Sonic game approach the greatness that is Mario 64. But then I think about the actual characters and I can't help but think that Sonic is actually a better, more interesting protagonist than Mario can ever hope to be. Sonic has style...he oozes it. He's just a really fun looking character. And Mario? He's a dorky plumber who spouts cringe-worthy phrases like "it's a-me, Mario!" (Well, there's that...and there's also this image of Ron Jeremy as Mario that I think will be in my nightmares for the rest of my life). I don't know. I'm just rambling because it's a slow news night. But there is something to this, I think.

GameCube GameBoy Advance 3D GBA and Mario 128 to be Revealed?
This one's totally out of left field...Computer and Video Games is reporting that an unnamed Japanese source has informed them that Nintendo may be holding a special event in Europe (possibly alongside ECTS) where they will unveil both Mario 128 and a new 3D chip for the Game Boy Advance. Take this with a whole ton of salt.
PS2 PS3 Logo?
Have you swallowed that salt from the previous story yet? You'd better be ready for a few more grains, as Gaming Horizon has posted what they say is a picture of the PlayStation 3 logo. Their source on the image is a Dutch website, which says it was revealed at a meeting between Sony and "an unnamed RAM company." If true, this would be Elpida Memory, which announced last week that they have signed a deal to provide memory for Sony's next console. Looking at the image, I must say that it is fitting with Sony's PlayStation brand, and I could easily see this being true. Having said that, there's no tangible proof of that.

Acclaim's 100 Bullets
Just one day after announcing they had signed a deal to make games based on the comic series The Red Star, Acclaim announced today that they have licensed the DC Comics/Vertigo series 100 Bullets, with the intent of making games for "next-generation console systems." Which presumably means the GameCube, PS2 and Xbox, despite very much being this generation.
PS2 No Radar in MGS 3
According to IGN, there will not be a radar in Metal Gear Solid 3, so as to create more tension. Fans of the series will recall that the radar has played a huge part in previous games, so this is somewhat surprising. On the other hand, Splinter Cell proved pretty well that it's not needed, so long as the gameplay is designed with this in mind.
Xbox Dreamcast Shenmue III Talk
GamerFeed is reporting that Yu Suzuki has answered a few questions on the official Japanese AM2 site. Suzuki-san comments on the chances of a Shenmue III, saying that he, "was not content with stopping at Shenmue II" and that he takes the opinions of the general public very seriously when deciding on future projects. So in other words, if you want a third Shenmue, get out there and say it loud.
Xbox Halo 2 Movie Friday
Bungie has announced that they will be releasing a direct-feed version of the Halo 2 demo that was shown at E3 last month this Friday. While big sites like IGN and GameSpot have been beating their chests and promising it to their subscribers, it would appear that Bungie themselves are releasing the movie, so as soon as they do, we'll get it mirrored on FileShack so you can download it from someplace that doesn't suck. According to Bungie's official Halo site, the movie will be released in both Windows Media 9 and Quicktime formats.
GameCube Xbox Auto Modelista Xbox-bound?
Online retailers EBGames and GameStop have both added an Xbox version of Capcom's Auto Modelista to their list of upcoming games, and their blurbs say that the game will be released in October and support Xbox Live. While not a confirmation, when both sites are in agreement about an unannounced game, it tends to be true. EBGames also lists a GameCube port of the game, care of publisher Xicat Interactive. GameStop does not have this, so that may not be true.
PS2 Hungry Hungry Ghosts
As noted in this story at GameSpot (which has some blurry screenshots), Sony of Japan has announced Hungry Ghosts, an upcoming action/adventure title from developer Deep Space. The game takes place in "the world of the dead" and your actions throughout the game will ultimately decide if you go to heaven or hell (neato...guess where I'm headed?). The game is apparently 95% done, and will be released in Japan this July for PS2.

New Armored Core on the Way
The latest issue of Famitsu (as reported at GamePro in English) has the news that From Software is working on a brand new Armored Core title. While nothing is really known about the game, they make a specific point of saying that this is not Armored Core 4 and that it will be released sometime next year.
GameBoy Advance Sonic Pinball Party Target Exclusive
If you've been having a hard time finding Sega's just-released Sonic Pinball Party, here's the reason why...IGN is reporting that the game is suddenly a Target exclusive, so if you want it you'll have to head to your nearest Target store.
Xbox Shocking, Shocking News
Now here's a cool console trick...TechTV has posted directions for modifying an Xbox controller to use actual electrical shocks instead of force feedback (thanks Slashdot Games). They're pretty detailed directions, but this is not for the faint of heart, and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who can't install an Afterburner without breaking a sweat (and even then it's not such a good idea).

NeoGeo - thanks Sur3aL!

Misc. Media/Previews
GameSpot has a new preview of Namco's Extreme Force: Grant City Anti-Crime (GC, PS2, Xbox), along with new shots from SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos (NeoGeo) and new shots from the Xbox port of Rainbow Six 3. Over at IGN they have a new hands-on look at Pirates of the Caribbean (Xbox), new stuff from SSX 3 (GC, PS2, Xbox) and the first shots and details from Metro3D's Gem Smashers (GBA). Elsewhere on the web, Games Are Fun has a few pictures of the limited-edition GameCube that's being released alongside Tales of Symphonia in Japan, and CvG has some shots from the GBA version of Stuntman.

Console Game of the Evening: Duck Hunt for the NES. "What a cool treat to get this game bundled on the same cartridge as Mario. The fun became exponentially greater when we realized one person could control the duck :-D Good times." (submitted by brewsterdog).

If true, the only good that will come of this is a port of Starfox. Rock!
