Late Night E3 Impressions
Well, here we are, my ninth and final E3 impressions article. Tonight's edition has impressions of Lords of EverQuest, Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2, Uru: Ages Beyond Myst, Vultures, The Elder Scrolls Travels, 007: Everything or Nothing, Call of Duty and the Xbox port of Operation Flashpoint. Here's an excerpt:
Call of Duty (PC): I didn't see a whole lot of this new World War II title from Infinity Ward, but I liked what little I did see. The game's developer Infinity Ward is comprised of many of the same people who made Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, and so this game bares some resemblance to that game. Call of Duty uses a heavily modified version of the Return to Castle Wolfenstein variation of the Q3A engine (I was told they replaced about 80% of that code base), and the changes to the engine were pretty substantial indeed. While Trinity looked dated, Call of Duty really held up well. It won't turn heads the same way Doom 3 will, but it's a big step up from Allied Assault. As Call of Duty takes place on a battlefield, the crux of the game's visuals have been devoted to making that as real an experience as possible. So when you look into the sky, you'll see planes going overhead, and not just simple animations...you'll see actual combat up there...This is indeed my final one of these articles, but my E3 blitz isn't done yet...I've still got a wrap-up article that should go up this weekend, and that will be followed by my second annual face-to-face interview with Morrowind developer Todd Howard. Look for that early next week.
