Several people let us know that Microsoft has released a new version of DirectX 9, now at 9.0a. According to Microsoft, "This release also resolves an issue with DirectX 9.0 where some multiplayer games or MSN Messenger may not work correctly. A number of minor bugs were also resolved.". Update: not sure what happened to the download link.

      I've been running DX9 for many weeks now and have had no issues at all.

        same here, and so far it's still stable on all my machines with 9.0a
