Late Night Consoling

64
Today being a holiday, there's not a whole lot of news tonight, which is just as well, since I'm itching to get back to Panzer Dragoon Orta, and after Friday's flood o' news it's nice to have a leisurely update. I'm about 3/4ths of the way through PDO at this point, and absolutely loving it. Yeah, it's short, but as I'm playing it I'm already looking forward to doing it a second time. And those alternate missions are just waiting for me to try those out.

Square, Enix Employees Not Thrilled With Merger
Apparently employees of Square and Enix aren't overjoyed about the coming merger. This isn't really a unique situation...employees of Rare sure as heck weren't thrilled when Microsoft purchased that company. What's interesting about this news is that if this report is to be believed, some designers will be jumping ship to form a new company. I'll be curious to hear who left and what, if any impact this has on upcoming projects.

The first batch will feature characters from Halo and the upcoming Brute Force, and will be packaged "with extra material that expands upon the actual game play experience."

Namco's Got High Hopes
Namco has released a statement where they say they want to sell two million copies of Soul Calibur 2 worldwide. Of course every company wants to sell that many copies, there just aren't many who manage to do that (and for what it's worth, SC2 has a pretty good shot).
Xbox Xbox #2 In Europe
With the usual amount of chest-beating, Microsoft released a PR today proudly stating that they are now the #2 console in Europe, and claiming to have outsold Nintendo by a ratio of 2:1 over the Christmas shopping season.
GameBoy Advance Shining Soul 2 Announced
We may not have the first one out over here yet, but Shining Soul 2 has been announced for release in Japan in the spring of 2003.
Xbox Peter Moore Leaves Sega, Moves to Microsoft
On the business side of things, Sega's former president and COO has left the company to join Microsoft as VP of sales and marketing for their home entertainment properties (including the Xbox and PC game products).
GameBoy Advance 007: NightFire on GBA
EA announced today a Game Boy Advance version of 007: NightFire. Obviously this isn't a port, but it is an FPS, and features a character who previously appeared in Agent Under Fire (in addition to Bond himself, of course).
GameCube Give Nintendo Some Feedback
A brief new survey is up at Nintendo's site, asking for feedback on a few different things, including whether or not you own an Xbox + Xbox Live.

Console Game of the Evening: Aliens vs. Predator for the Atari Jaguar. For those who've played it, this is one awesome game, and was in my opinion superior to the PC version that followed (which was itself a very good game).
