Late Night Consoling

63

My last day of filling in for Jason, who will return next week. This week certainly made me even more aware of how uninformed I am about all the console games, but thanks for all the positive words about my updates ;) The big console story of the day of course is the launch of Xbox Live. IGN, GameSpot as well as GameSpy have several Xbox Live articles and there are stories at News.com and Wired among other places as well. Be sure to share your impressions if you managed to get your hands on the starter kit. ostrichboy already created this Xbox Live gamertag list for those of you who want to play against other Shackers.

Xbox Xbox LossesA new financial report filed by Microsoft shows that the company is losing quite a bit of money on the Xbox, as was expected. The Xbox is part of Microsoft's home and entertainment division, and that division posted a net loss of $177 million during the period of July 1 through September 30, while the loss was $68 million last year during the same period. Microsoft as a whole is still reporting net profits of more than $2 billion per quarter so they can take this hit.
GameCube Capcom's New GameCube TitlesCapcom Japan has announced five GameCube titles. Capcom wouldn't be Capcom without Resident Evil and indeed, Biohazard 4 for the GameCube is on its way. More proof that if you don't think this game is worth buying a GCN for, you're a fucking idiot.

75% through, and it's still one of my favorite games ever, creeping towards that #1 spot.

Ya thats what I heard about Halo.

Now I have a useless Xbox. (until something worthwhile comes out)

        Didn't even bother finishing it.

Console FPS's SUCK. If you have ever used mouse/keyboard I don't know how you ever enjoy console FPS's.

Ohh well the review said it has Metroid has auto-aiming so heres hoping it will be better.

I've never been a metroid fanboy either.

At least if take my time getting it I wont have to wait for more orders. It's not like anyone owns a gamecube. :D

I don't think a GC is worth buying for the 3 games I would play. I guess I'm a fucking idiot.

Different strokes for different folks I guess. My XBox has been gathering dust up until today (imo, there is still a SERIOUS lack of quality games on that system) when I fired up Mechassault for XBox Live. Its pretty fun. Not amazingly great or anything, but fun. Easy to jump into, easy to have a good time. Hopefully new interesting gametypes can be downloaded later (ie - CTF, etc). Voice chat is clear as a bell, which is nice. I'm really looking forward to getting Capcom vs SNK 2 for Live when it comes out.

My PS2 (which I had played a TON) has been sitting around the last few months, up until I got Vice City and Contra last week.

For me, my Gamecube has taken up most of my time outside of the PC this year. Eternal Darkness, Mario Sunshine, Monkey Ball 2, SSBM, all took out huge chunks of time for me. And as much as I was looking forward to Vice City, I can't remember the last game I've anticipated as much as Metroid Prime. Absolutely can't fricking wait.

But yeah, different strokes I guess.

One more thing re: Mechassault, a fun team game to play is to have four or so Elementals (those little jetpack dudes) VS one big Mech, like a Mad Cat or Uziel. Played preferably in a city map. GOOD TIMES

Yes, it is different strokes. I have over 10 Xbox games that my wife and I play a fair amount. I would say I play about half and half PC/Xbox.

Call me cheap, but I like it that no one likes xbox. A game'll come out, and I'll wait 2 months and buy it on sale for $29.99.

I dunno about that, the games do drop but I think it's aggresive pricing. We went to Future Shop today and the Xbox rack had a lot of titles that were between $40-60. THe GC side had a few value titles. Not to mention that the GC side was about 50% smaller than the Xbox rack. I was going to buy a GC instead of a PS2 this Xmas because I thought there would be more titles I wanted. It looks like it's PS2 time in my house Xmas morning.

I love my PS2 to death. However, unless you want to play games like ICO, GTA3, Vice City, Frequency, etc, all of which I LOVE, I would hold off on getting the PS2. Cross-platform games are better off on the XBox since the hardware is better.

I recently upgraded to a 40" Sony high def WEGA. The only downside to it is that the PS2 looks worse than it did before, since the higher quality of the set better shows off the inherent flaws in the PS2 graphics. The grainiess and pixellization of the image is that much more apparent on a really good set. The Cube and XBox don't have that issue as they both deliver great images right off the bat, and can also display progressive scan.

In the end, its all about the games. More and more PS2 games are crossing over into XBox territory, and unless there is a PS2 exclusive that you want, I would skip it.

I wouldn't buy it either, luckily I just play a borrowed one. I didn't buy a N64, even though Zelda and Mario looked pretty good.

Well, that seals the deal. I'm gonna have to slide my Xbox over and find $200 for a GC + Metroid.
