Condition Zero: 2003?

59
So, everyone remember Condition Zero? A while back Gearbox Software was working on the game and it looked like it was only a couple months away from completion. We were even invited up to Gearbox to do a a little preview of it as we do with some games nearing completion in the Dallas area. Well, we've heard a total of nothing about CZ since. All we've got is back in July the Sierra release schedule was updated to list CZ as a fall release, and a trailer that was released the day Fileshack launched over 3 months ago. Well then, we're smack in the middle of Fall now and there has been nothing announced or a peep of PR, except for a couple of the CZ weapons finding their way into the upcoming Counter-Strike 1.6 release date. However, it appears that retailers are being told to push back their estimated release dates yet again. Generally speaking, you can almost never trust an online retailer who lists a game as coming out earlier than expected, as they get their dates from optimistic (delusional) publishers. However when you start to see dates pushed back nearly half a year, something is up.

- GameStop : 6 / 2 / 2003
- EBGames: 5 /1 / 2003
- Amazon: 2 / 1 / 2003
- CompUSA: 2 / 15 / 2003

Thanks to CSNation for first noticing this. I've fired off an email to the Valve folks asking whats up of course.

Hahhahhahhaha! Oh man... I love my xbox.

Sad thing is, according to GTA3, The PS2 would get about 30fps with the HL engine. Or, at least, with Rockstar coding it.

GTA3 has a lot better draw distance and such. Anyhow HL for PS2 runs fine...

the HL engine on the XBox? That would be an insult to Microsoft.

Nightfire is Quake 2-based? I heard it was just suped-up HL/CS, which is Q1 based... but I could be wrong.

It's an all new renderer - READ THE NIGHTFIRE PREVIEWS! But I think some basic code is still left - like the console IO, or some basic loading routines (why touch a perfectly working routine that saves the config?!). No code reflecting HL rendering though.

I'm think that's just for the PC side. One reason the driving levels were taken out for the PC port is that it would be too hard for Gearbox to do with their engine.

The console version switches to the NFS engine I think, which on the PC would just be... silly. You'd see NF FPS close down, then the NFS part of the game load up since merging the two engines would be nightmarish!

Waiting for the driving engine to load up couldn't be any worse than waiting for a new area to load at every other doorway in the nightfire demo. My guess is it is more likely that EA was just too cheap and in too much of a hurry to get the port done well.
