Late Night Consoling
GameSpot has a rather lengthy interview with Peter Molyneux online tonight, where the legendary designer speaks for some nine pages about his various projects, focusing largely on Project Ego, the upcoming RPG that makes Morrowind sound as ambitious as one of those games starring the Olsen twins. It's a good read, but I just have such a bad feeling about this game...Peter Molyneux is absolutely the guy who can pull this off...but all of the things he's excited about doing in this game just don't sound like they're going to be any fun. I'm sorry, but I just don't want to play a game where my character ages that much. And for the life of me I can't imagine how they're going to have the option to get married and have children as anything but a ridiculous game option. Building interpersonal relationships in a game is extremely difficult if you expect anyone to have any kind of emotional attachment to the characters. But courtship, plus marriage, plus parenthood, all of which is completely separate from the core storyline seems like a pipe dream. And not a good one at that. If Lionhead and Big Blue Box really pull this off, I'll be the first in line to buy a copy, but it doesn't seem like it's worth the effort it'll take to do it.
- Also at GameSpot is a chat with Seamus Blackley, who talks briefly about his new venture (as reported here earlier).
- Bethesda Softworks (those wacky kids behind Morrowind) have announced that they will be publishing the PSOne port of Black & White later this year. The game is obviously scaled down from its original PC incarnation.
- Looks like GameCube owners will no longer be the only system without a Medal of Honor game planned...EA has announced that Medal of Honor Frontline will be released for Nintendo's console (as well as the previously announced PS2 version). Allied Assault is being ported to the Xbox.
- PS2.IGN has posted a hands-on look at Legion: The Legend of Excalibur, the upcoming PS2 strategy game from some former members of the Command & Conquer team at Westwood.
- Here's a weird news item...a cartoon show is in the works based on Nintendo's Kirby games. Considering that he's just a pink fluffball, it should be fairly surreal.
- LucasArts has announced Gladius, a single and multiplayer turn-based action RPG set in the Roman empire for Xbox, GameCube and PS2. A preview (complete with screenshots) can be found at Cube.IGN.
- Square's talking about their online plans again...they have said that the game cost between $16 and $24 million (converted from Yen), and re-confirmed a PC port. Also of note is that they have another online title "very different from FF" in the works.
- It looks like the switch from cel-shaded graphics may have delayed House of the Dead 3 in the process.
- Just because I know you all want to see them...here they are...the first screenshots from Shin Roommania, the latest roommate sim from Sega. These games crack me up.
- Halo has dropped significantly in the Japanese sales charts after its impressive debut in the top ten. It's at least still on the charts, which says something.
- In preparation for the GameCube debut, Sega's shutting down three of their Phantasy Star Online Dreamcast servers.
