Late Night Consoling

As mentioned here last night, today was the big Nintendo/Namco press conference, and the two companies are indeed collaborating on a new Star Fox title, which will be more like the original game than the upcoming Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet. I was a big fan of the first two Star Fox games, so this is pretty exciting news. Hopefully they'll keep the annoying sidekick factor down to an absolute minimum. But that wasn't the only thing announced today from Namco...they've also confirmed a handful of other GameCube and GBA titles, including a GameCube Ridge Racer, a new Tales RPG and a GBA port of the original Tales of Destiny, and lots more. Full details are up at Cube.IGN, complete with pictures from the event.

  • Although there wasn't quite as much fanfare, 3DO announced today that they too have become an official GameCube developer, and will be releasing several games for the system, including the inevitable Army Men titles, and Four Horsemen, an adult-themed RPG with characters and drawings by "a famous comic book artist."
  • Enjoying the GameCube Resident Evil remake? Good, because there's more on the way...Resident Evil 0 will be out in Japan on August 28th. The game looks to be the first title for Nintendo's system to span three of those itty bitty discs.
  • On a similar note, XenGamers has translated a Q&A with Capcom's Shinji Mikami and Hiroyuki Kobayashi, where they talk about the evolution of RE0 from its N64 roots to its new tri-disc GameCube incarnation.
  • Also at XenGamers is another translated Q&A, this time with Namco president Youichi Haraguchi, who talks about their plans for the Xbox.
  • Konami has announced the games they'll be showing at E3. The list includes Silent Hill 3 for PS2, and new PS2 and GBA Contra titles.
  • A bunch of ex-Core employees have left to start Gatehouse Games, whose first product will be Spiralstone, a GBA RPG.
  • No shockers here: that Xbox price drop has really helped pick up sales in Europe.
  • Continuing to stand on its own despite the assault that is the GameBoy Advance, Bandai has announced a new version of the WonderSwan Color called the Swan Crystal. It sports a slightly larger, clearer LCD and a swankier design, and gets 15 hours off a single AA battery. This system was so close to coming out over here...but it'll never happen at this point.
  • Middle Earth Vault has conducted a Q&A with Tom Heaton, lead designer at Pocket Studios on the upcoming Lord of the Rings GBA RPG.
Console Game of the Evening: Star Fox 64 for the Nintendo 64. A good step up from the original in many ways...if only Slippy wasn't so damn chatty.
