Late Night Consoling

As this story at PS2.IGN shows, those rumors about Rare making the move to non-Nintendo platforms refuse to die, as a European PS2 magazine ran a hint suggesting that we'll see a PS2 game from the developer at E3 next month. I know it sounds ludicrous, but I'm starting to think there's some truth here after all, based on this and other hints dropped over the last month or so. Of course, even if it is true, properties like Star Fox, Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie and others are owned by Nintendo, and the chances any of them will ever appear on a non-Nintendo system is next to zero (unless Nintendo gets out of the hardware business, and I doubt that'll happen).

  • Speaking of Nintendo's business dealings, GameSpot has posted a Q&A with Perrin Kaplan, the VP of corporate affairs, who comments on the success of the GameCube and GBA among other things. She even comments on the Rare rumors, saying that "our good relationship with them continues and there aren't any changes at this time."
  • Also at GameSpot is a look at the long-awaited Toe Jam & Earl III.
  • The first batch of in-game screenshots from Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance have made their way online (including a shot of Sub-Zero without his mask), and The Realm of Mortal Kombat has some direct links and details on their site.
  • Wondering what's up with Sega's new Shinobi game? At long last, real info and clear screenshots have surfaced.
  • Another ninja franchise we haven't heard much about is Tecmo's new Ninja Gaiden...according to one source, the game we see at E3 may revolve around a female ninja character from Dead or Alive.
  • A bunch of new Square info is up at The Madman's Cafe...among the tidbits: the only major projects this year will be Final Fantasy-related, including spin-off games (like FF Tactics) and they will be re-releasing Chrono Trigger, FF Tactics, Seiken Densetsu and Parasite Eve (no word as to whether or not these are remakes or just re-releases).
  • Also mentioned at MMC is some tech-info about FF XI that was apparently revealed at a Sun product forum (the game is powered by UltraSparc servers). There will be 20 "worlds" (servers) each of which can hold up to 60,000 simultaneous gamers.
Console Game of the Evening: Alex Kidd in Shinobi World for the Sega Master System. Holy crossovers, Batman! This game is just nutty.
