Windows XP & Piracy

12

Looks like MS is going to be making some changes to the anti-piracy stuff because of XP's not-so-willingness to get along with hardware upgrades.

Beta tester? Tell me things about system resource hogging and hardware compatibility - better than WINME? Will Diablo 2 still lock up 4 out of 10 tries?

No I'm not a beta tester. RC1 is out and you can download RC1 and RC2 for $10 at http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/preview/order.asp

          My system is:

          Dual Pentium III 1 GHz
          512 ECC RAM

Diablo II runs just fine for me. That includes the expansion pack. All my games run fine :) My DOS games do run in Windows XP, but there is no sound because creative labs has given me basic drivers. Soon they will have DOS drivers soon.

I'd love to DL RC1 to check it out, but on dial-up? No!

                from the microsloth website"

"If your system meets the requirements to run Windows XP, check the additional download requirements, and then you can order the Windows XP Preview Program. There is an extra charge of $10 (USD), for a total of $19.95, if you prefer to get Windows XP Professional Release Candidate 1 on CD via regular mail. (If you choose the CD option, you will not be eligible to download Release Candidate 1.) Windows XP Release Candidate 2 will be available to all program participants only via download from the Internet.

Do they have a hardware compatibility list anywhere? I'd like to know that my stuff works before I commit to a long download like that.

                #8:

Wink2 drivers work fine on XP. But there is some support for OpenGL via the compatibility mode. (you know, the thing that made some games run on 2k).

The default Nvidia drivers for XP don't have openGL, but if you download the latest drivers from Nvidia (the ones for Win2K work for XP, as well), you'll have full OpenGL support.

So relax, okay? Back during the days of Windows 98SE, 98, and 95, there wasn't even any video drivers for Nvidia products, or they were so old they were buggy. :p

Once you complete your download and burned your copy of Windows XP RC1. You can install a freshcopy of Windows XP. There is a utility that will test for hardware/software compatibility (This program only runs if you're running Windows 9X/NT/2000, it won't run in DOS mode). All my hardware/software passed except for Norton Anti-Virus 2001. But I would recommend a fresh install over upgrade. I have Windows 2000 SP2 on drive D: and Windows XP on Drive E: If Windows XP screws up, it won't take my primary drive with it. Let me remind you this isn't the final product but very damn close to final product :)

I ordered the CD. Figure, what the hell, I can just bust a low level format on my HD and reinstall ME if it gets overly hijacked by XP.

RC2 isn't released yet, so I can't comment on the differences yet :)
