Homeworld = Good
Just downloaded and ran the Homeworld demo. After just a little bit I'm really enjoying this game. It's a cross between Battlestar Galactica and... well... Battlestar Galactica (without the cylons). They have made what I think is the best way this type of game could have been made. What is it? Basically, it's a space RTS. You are the commander of a fleet that consists of a mother ship and plenty of units that you build. Everything moves in 3D space in a way that's quite simple to manuever. That and all the RTS elements (fog of war, resources, repairs) all make really good sense in the emptiness of space. The battles are really cool - you set up formations a la Myth 2 and even tactics (Evasive and Aggressive) and attack groups of AI guys. Then, your dudes attack in ways that make sense while keeping general formation. Formations seem to be quite important to the combat of the game. Finding a bunch of dudes coming at you in a line or delta formation and just putting 20 scouts in a sphere around them is so cool :) The graphics and the interface of the game are quite genius. You really need a good interface to pull off a game like this, and I really dig it. The movement disc stuff is great once you get used to it, as is the sensor mode. And zooming in and out of sensor mode (read: map view) is seamless and great. You need to play the tutorial to move around though. It's easy and great, but it's not something you'll just guess really quickly. I'm finally glad to see this out. When I worked for 3dfx, this would be at trade show after trade show showing on one of our machines. I would fiddle with it, but I never knew how to control the game, so I'd just watch the demo loop which was amazing. I've wanted to play this game forever, glad it's out there and it's so damned good. (Get it here)

Well, if I had about a zillion hours to spend configuring this sucker, I might enjoy it. Give me Q2 anyday!
