2 years of hype without demo = gay
Seriously though... This product needs a massive post-mortem. The stated goal is to provide an "extremely realistic combat environment to Quake 3 that's a lot of fun", or something like that. What that really means is, "We want to be more popular than Counterstrike". That's why they keep saying, "NSCO is not Counterstrike, it's something new".
They want their mod to be as "innovative" as counterstrike was and have better gameplay (as well as better graphics, I suppose). The real question is whether this is possible in a reasonable timeframe. I mean, full software houses with 25 employees have trouble putting out games like that in 1.5 - 2 years...
I think the real problem is the comparison to Counterstrike. It's just bogging them down. The whole team is pressured by this "Gotta be better *and* different than CS" mentality. If you always focus on your competitor, you'll just end up a shadowy reflection of them.
Compare this with Urban Terror. Sure, they were thinking about Counterstrike too when making their mod. But they just said, "Hey, we'll release a mod and see what people think." Some people liked it, some didn't. Maybe it was better or worse than CS, but they didn't really care. They just used the feedback to make a Beta 2, which people said was "a lot more fun". Better than CS? Who cares.

Oh, my bad. I thought Q3 had been out for 2 years by now. I guess it's just 1.5 years of development. But yeah, I remember them annoucing almost immediately after the q3 source code got out. So that definitly makes me think they were planning the mod before then, so perhaps it's even longer than 1.5 years.
I doubt it though. If you spent 6 months in pre-production development, you'd have saved tons of time already-- your project wouldn't take another 1.5 years on top of that. Oh well...
