The Inquirer is reporting about plans by VIA's S3 to create a new video chipset. Supposedly this "Columbia" chip comes with a fully programmable tile renderer (Chameleon), runs at 300MHz and will have full DX8/9 support. It should come out to compete with ATI and NVidia later this year.
