Splatoon has been one of the only games of its kind in the shooter space for quite a long time, and confined to Nintendo Switch at that, but Square Enix might be bringing some interesting competition in the form of Foamstars. This four-on-four team shooter challenges players to take up soap-shooting weapons and lather up the battlefield in bubbles, and it’s coming to PS4 and PS5.
Foamstars was announced during the PlayStation Showcase 2023 presentation on May 24, 2023. The game is slated to come to PS4 and PS5 sometime in the near future and features a 4-on-4 competition in which players use soap-based weapons to blast each other and cover the battlefield in their color of suds. It would appear that making sure the field is covered more in your team color’s foam than your opponent’s is going to be just as important as blasting your opponents. Check out the trailer below.
That said, it looks like blasting your opponents will also be a big part of the fun, and it looks like you’ll have plenty of weapons to do it. We saw rapid-fire soap guns, beams, splashers, and plenty more. It looks like there are super weapons as well, such as the ability to wrap yourself in a giant bubble and roll over foes. We also saw what looks like a giant orbital strike of suds during the trailer.
It's hard not to see Foamstars as coming for Splatoon’s lunch based on how many similarities we saw in this trailer alone, but it will be exciting to see how it plays out when we see more from Square Enix later on. Stay tuned for updates as they happen.
