There’s nothing quite like a bit of retro gaming to soothe the soul. As luck would have it, Nintendo announced today that a wealth of Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis titles are making their way to the Switch Online catalogue. Furthermore, Nintendo is releasing an N64 and Genesis controller for use with these Switch Online titles.
During the Nintendo Direct on September 23, Nintendo revealed the Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis controllers that are designed so that the titles can be played with their original controllers. Both of these can be used wirelessly, which is excellent given how short some of the cables have been with things like the NES Classic.
Right now, it looks as if the Nintendo 64 controller uses the iconic light gray from back when the console first released. Meanwhile, the SEGA Genesis controller is a sleek black. Whether or not Nintendo has plans for different styles remains to be seen. I’d personally love to see a translucent purple N64 controller – in fact, I think it’s time to bring back translucent consoles and peripherals.
One thing to note about the controllers is that players that want one must have a Nintendo Switch Online membership – which is a strange limitation. Thankfully, the Switch Online membership is rather affordable and the controllers will only set you back $49.99 USD a pop.
There were a whole host of exciting announcements out of the Nintendo Direct today, including word on the Disco Elysium – The Final Cut coming to Switch, Wreckfest too, and even a look at a new Kirby title. Be sure to check out the Shacknews Nintendo page for our coverage of the event.
