During this afternoon’s Apple Special Event, the Cupertino, California-based company took the wraps off the newest generation of iPhones. While the four new iPhone 13 models are similar in size and build to last year’s handsets, the new iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max will ship with 120Hz ProMotion displays. This marks the first time Apple has used high-refresh displays outside of their work-focuses iPad models.
Dubbed Super Retina XDR, these displays have long been a part of Apple’s high-end tablets targeted at professionals and creative users. Now, the smoother motion and reduced latency will be available to iPhone Pro and Pro Max users. Apple promises that these new 120Hz displays will make day-to-day use of the phones nicer and the company has devised a system to allow the refresh rate to change dynamically to match the user’s needs while maintaining improved battery life.
"The advanced custom architecture produces fast frame rates when you need them, and preserves battery life when you don't," explained Greg Joswiak, Apple senior VP of worldwide marketing. "The result is an incredibly responsive experience that is fast and fluid."
In addition to fluid refresh rates, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max also get the benefit of 1000-nit displays. This increased brightness works in tandem with the OLED panel technology to offer top-tier HDR output for photos and videos. Apple is also tempting video enthusiasts with new lenses and sensors that will make the process of filming content encoded with Dolby Vision HDR easier than ever before.
