New Xbox feature will let you download games before buying them

Players will be able to fully install games before purchasing them on Xbox.

Microsoft is constantly updating and tweaking the Xbox layout and user experience, often to much criticism. However, a new feature will likely be a hit with the masses. Xbox is implementing the ability for players to install games before they buy them. This will allow users to fully install games before spending a single dollar.

Having to fully install games before playing them are one of the biggest inconveniences of modern consoles. Fans often find themselves counting down the minutes to when a download is set to finish, so that they can jump into the action. This was combated with the ability to download games after digitally pre-orders, but still didn’t help in several other circumstances.

This feature was spotted by Jerko Cilas, a writer for Lords of Gaming. Through the Xbox Store or mobile app, players can directly begin downloading a game from its store page. This will be incredibly convenient for fans of physical media. You can now download a game ahead of launch day, and begin playing as soon as you get the disc and pop it into your console. With game download sizes only getting bigger, the pre-download feature only makes sense. Here’s hoping other major players in the console market will adopt a similar model in the future.

Xbox and console system storage have been making the rounds in the news lately. Just earlier this week, we learned more about how custom additional storage will work with the Xbox Series X, including its hefty price tag. Don’t games download from disks in about 5 seconds? That seems silly to advertise it that way, maybe mention if day one patches are included, that is where the time savings could come in

Games aren't streamed from disc any more IIRC. They need to be installed to the hard drive of the console. This process is time consuming. Being able to do that ahead of time could save you 20-30 minutes or more I think

In my experience, modern games that are 30-70gb can take at least 5-10 minutes to install, maybe longer.

Just put Dark Souls 3 on my PS4, the update took like 10 minutes but putting the full game from disk to the system was almost instant. I do have an SSD in my PS4 so maybe that helps, but these new hard drives are even faster so once again, I dont see this as a time saver unless the patches also download.

Then it must be streamed via the disc and not actually on the SSD because optical drives are not anywhere near fast enough for 30-70GB to be transferred anywhere close to instantly.

Like you said earlier though, this generation does not do that. I think the longest I have seen a game download from disk to hard drive was about 10 minutes. Dark Souls games are like 20 gigs or less I think so they load up pretty fast.

Pretty sure this generation DOES do that if you want it to (also possibly not optionally depending on the game?)

You're talking about PS4 which isn't Xbox. And I haven't used physical media for games on Xbox since Xbox 360 so it sounds like neither of us have first hand experience here.

Correct I have never done this on the Xbone, only disks I have for that are CoDs from the 360 era.

The icon popping up on the screen does not mean it's installed, it was likely installing the game during that 10 minute update.

Also that game is only a 17gb install so it's going to be quicker than average.

A better example are game demos where you actually download the entire game or the portion of the game you need to play it long enough for all the rest of the assets to download in the background. When you purchase it, the rest of the game will unlock.

Recently, Plague Tale: Innocence’s demo behaved that way for me on PSN

Exactly that is what takes the time to get the game up and running is downloading all the patches. Especially in a world where day one 20-40 gig patches exist.

I get the feeling older models must have shitty WiFi cards in them, because this Pro I have that’s about a year old downloads everything about as fast as my laptop.

Downloads on my standard PS4 were all over the place and usually very slow
