During Gamescom Opening Night Live, a brand new game based on Sam and Max was officially revealed. It was a nice surprise for fans of the series, as the property has sat dormant for several years. Following the presentation, the game was given the official title of Sam and Max: This Time it’s Virtual. This was hinted at during the trailer, where we see our titular characters wearing cardboard VR masks.
Originally developed by LucasArts, Sam and Max was a light-hearted comedy-adventure series about two animal police officers that worked together to solve mysteries and fight crime. Beginning its original run as a comic in 1987, Sam and Max saw several adaptations in both print, animation, and video games. The franchise has gone without any new series or game in many years, making it an excellent reveal for those with nostalgia for the property.
The Sam and Max comics often parodied and poked fun at American pop culture. We expect this to be on full display in Sam and Max: This Time it’s Virtual. The project is currently being developed by HappyGiant Games, the team behind various mobile titles. The Sam and Max revival is targeting a release date at some point in 2021.
With Sam and Max: This Time it’s Virtual still a ways away, we expect to learn more about the game in the future. In fact, the trailer ends with the promise of more details soon. When that happens, you can expect to read all about it right here on Shacknews.
