It’s not easy being a cheater in gambling. Your every move is under scrutiny as you carefully use sleight-of-hand technique to manipulate the game to your advantage. If you fail, the consequences can be dire depending on your opponent. Such is the tentative line presented in Card Shark, a card hustler game from developer Nerial and Devolver Digital coming to Nintendo Switch and PC in 2021.
Card Shark was announced with a trailer showing off its various sneaky gambling tricks on the Nintendo Indie World presentation on August 18, 2020. Taking players back to 18th Century France, you’ll step into the shoes of a grifter who learns to become the most impeccable of card cheats. Utilizing real sleight-of-hand, misdirection, and other actual card tricks of the trade utilized by Comte de Saint Germain, we’ll be treated to a roguelike progression system in which clever deception and management of winnings could see us buying our way into higher stakes card games. On the flipside, getting caught in the act could come with the most unfortunate of consequences, including a black powder pistol ball through your powder-wigged dome. Card Shark is slated for a launch sometime in 2021.
Card Shark is one Nerial’s latest projects. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the group has previously worked at the Reigns strategy franchise. The Reigns games have been popular among players on various platforms, especially including Reigns: Game of Thrones, which won itself the Modojo @ Shacknews Mobile Game of the Year in 2018. It’s also another Devolver Digital jam, coming fresh off the heels of the launch of Carrion, which also came to Nintendo Switch. It’s curious that we didn’t see this one at the recent Devolver Direct presentation, but it looks like it will fit right at home in Devolver’s library of bizarre, ridiculous, and funky fun games.
As we don’t have a launch window outside of 2021 on Nintendo Switch and PC just yet, stay tuned for further news and information on Nerial’s Card Shark, including release dates and possible further platforms for the game.
