It’s been a while since we heard anything about Spelunky 2, but the procedurally generated action platformer had a surprise showing during the PlayStation State of Play. During the showing, we learned that not only is the game launching in September this year, but it’s also getting new online multiplayer so you can adventure (or betray) with your friends whether together or online in addition to a multitude of other fun features.
The new Spelunky 2 gameplay trailer was shown during the PlayStation State of Play presentation on August 6, 2020. One of the biggest reveals during the entire trailer was that it’s coming to PlayStation 4 on September 15, 2020. Moreover, Spelunky 2 will be getting online multiplayer. The first was entirely local co-op, but Spelunky 2 will allow players to link up online to challenge the new randomized levels and challenges the game has in store for us. Developer Derek Yu of Mossmouth explained that the goal is to give players more access to create their emergent stories in their ongoing runs in the game. You can see the new gameplay in action in the trailer just below.
It’s not the first time we’ve heard Spelunky 2’s creators talk about the aforementioned priority. When we talked to Mossmouth’s Derek Yu, he spoke to how much he wanted to make this new game’s world feel alive with new interactions and choices throughout. To that end, shopping interactions and other situations have been revamped to make players make more choices that could help or ruin their journey through Spelunky 2’s depths.
Though Spelunky 2 was delayed into 2020 by unforeseen difficulties, it’s nice to see the game back on the table with new content. It will arrive on PS4 on the September 15 release date, with a PC version coming soon after apparently, so get your whips, bombs, and rope ready and get ready for a cooperative adventure, online or off.dsds
