The PlayStation 5 is set to release on November 12, 2020, in North America, Japan, Australia, New Zealand, and South Korea. A launch to the remaining worldwide markets will occur on November 19, 2020. The new console will arrive with two different SKUs, a version featuring an optical disc drive capable of UHD Blu-ray playback and a version without an optical drive. The discless model will be known as the PS5 Digital Edition. All other specifications remain identical between the two PS5 models.
The PlayStation 5 will also offer up a slew of new accessories for fans to pick up at launch. These include:
The PS5 will also support both vertical and horizontal placement, as it has in the past, and will feature USB-A and USB-C ports along the front.
The PlayStation 5 is by far one of the most anticipated releases of the year, and on March 18, Sony finally shared information about the internal specs of the console. According to a presentation by Mark Cerny, the PlayStation 5 will include the follow specs:
The PlayStation 5 will also feature a special boost function, that will make use of the variable frequencies supported by its CPU. This will allow the console to provide peak performance when needed. It looks like Sony is also requiring that all games be installed to the internal SSD that comes with the PS5, which should help new titles make use of the increased read speeds available because of that SSD.
On the same day that Sony confirmed worldwide release dates for the PS5 consoles, they also shared final pricing information. PS5 Digital Edition will be available for a recommended retail price of $399.99/¥39,980/€399.99/£359.99, and PS5 with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be available for $499.99/¥49,980/€499.99/£449.99. Pre-orders will be available starting September 17, 2020, at select retailers.
