The Destiny 2 campaign order can be quite obtuse for a lot of new players. If you’ve just joined in on the fun with New Light, figuring out where to go and what to do is tough enough before you even consider the story. There are a lot of missions to play, and playing them in the correct order requires a bit of effort.
Previously, Amanda Holliday, the Shipwright, would be responsible for offering Legacy campaigns. However, with the introduction of the Destiny Content Vault, several old campaigns have been removed from the game. This occurs annually (at a minimum) as new content is introduced to the game.
As of Season 16, the only replayable campaign is The Witch Queen. There are currently no means of replaying the Shadowkeep or Beyond Light campaign stories other than by starting a new character.
There are now around 50 or so campaign missions, and each one takes place at a certain time in the Destiny 2 story. If you’re a new player, the first mission you play will take you through the Cosmodrome, have you fight a Spider Tank, and collect a new gun. Following this, and depending on if you've purchased the premium content, you can continue on to Shadowkeep, Beyond Light, and The Witch Queen campaigns.
The Red War campaign was the first campaign in Destiny 2. It is currently unavailable. Previously, players could start it via Holliday in the Hangar.
The Curse of Osiris campaign has been removed from Destiny 2. The campaign order for Curse of Osiris was as follows:
The Warmind campaign is no longer available in Destiny 2. This was the order of the Warmind campaign missions:
With the release of The Witch Queen, the Forsaken campaign and associated content was removed from Destiny 2. Previously, the campaign started on the Tangled Shore. For historical purposes, you can read over our Forsaken campaign guide for a look at what it entailed.
It’s worth noting that after the third mission, Scorned, each of the hunts for the Scorned leaders can be completed in any order. However, they each have a different recommended Power. If you complete them in the order above, it will be a gradual climb in challenge.
The Shadowkeep campaign is started on the Moon. Check out the Shacknews Shadowkeep campaign guide for a complete walkthrough of every quest. There are a few moments where progression isn’t entirely clear, and we help navigate these instances.
The Beyond Light campaign kicks off on Europa, a new planet added with the Beyond Light expansion. This campaign tackles a new Eliksni threat that is trying to harness the power of the Darkness.
The Witch Queen campaign takes place on Mars and Savathun's Throne World. This new campaign comes with two different flavors, Normal and Legendary, and can actually be replayed via the Throne World map. The story follows Savathun, who has stolen the Light of the Traveler and is raising an armor of Hive Guardians.
The Lightfall campaign takes place on Neptune in a futuristic city called Neomuna. For this campaign, Emperor Calus is attempting to reach the Veil, a mysterious entity or object that is the last piece in the Witness' plans. As with the Witch Queen, Lightfall comes in two different flavors: Classic and Legendary, with the tougher version offering greater rewards.
The Final Shape campaign released on June 4, 2024 and is the conclusion to the Light and Darkness saga that started back in 2014. The campaign takes players into the Traveler to confront the Witness once and for all.
Now that Destiny 2 is free-to-play (at least the base game and Legacy content), new players are looking to experience the story. There are a lot of missions on offer, so knowing the Destiny 2 campaign order is going to help with planning out your playtime.
