Discord confirms new round of layoffs to "meet goals"

Discord has made a round of internal layoffs, the service confirmed today.

The Discord layoffs, the number of which is currently undisclosed, took place yesterday, but were only just confirmed via GameIndustry.biz today. A representative spoke on the company's behalf about the reasoning behind the move.

"Yesterday we made an active shift in the talent needs of our marketing department to better serve our growing business and future ambitions," said the Discord representative "As part of this, some difficult personnel decisions had to be made to meet these goals."

Recently, Discord made a few concerning moves that could also have been related to the idea that the company wasn't close to meeting its "goals" thus far. It shut down the Discord storefront in March 2019 to pivot for developers to sell games through their own Discord channels, and them the announcement was made that later this month, the system will no longer give away free games for Discord Nitro subscribers.

Still, Discord was supposedly doing quite well up until now. It's a shame, as at least when this optimistic video was posted, the future seemed bright, without too many cares to focus on at all.

As additional details surface about the layoffs, we'll be sure to keep you posted. Here's hoping that anyone affected by the cuts ends up on their feet and finds swift new employment.
