How Dead Cells keeps players coming back for more

Motion Twin’s Dead Cells was met with much critical acclaim after its release last year. It netted itself a 9/10 right here on Shacknews and took home number two in our top ten indie games of 2018. Since then, fans have been hungry for any additional content the roguelike has to offer. Our own CEO, Editor-in-chief, and Chief puppy wrangler Asif Khan interviewed a producer behind Dead Cells on the game’s upcoming content.

When launching a project, developers often have a roadmap of content and DLC they have planned. This can lay the groundwork for years of post-launch releases in some cases. Motion Twin had their own ideas for future content, but always revolved around community feedback. “We work very close to the community” the devs often consulted their fans through an official discord server. In the interview above, we expand on these ideas.

Having an “addicting gameplay loop” can often have a negative connotation attached to it. Dead Cells manages to be an addicting game, while remaining fair and balanced. “I think it’s mostly because of the satisfaction of the controls. You know, we put a lot of effort into the feedback when creating the game.” It’s the simple things that keep players coming back for more, and Dead Cells pull has been its well refined mechanics.
